Holy Family Athletics Celebrates the 50th Anniversary of Title IX

Thursday, June 23, 2022 marks the 50th anniversary of the Title IX's passage.

37 words that changed the landscape of collegiate athletics forever:

"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."

The Holy Family Department of Athletics asked administrators and coaches what Title IX means to them:

"As it relates to athletics, Title IX has been instrumental in creating opportunities for girls and women in athletics. Over the past 50 years there has been exponential growth in participation by girls and women in sports, which benefits society at large. In addition, Title IX has created a safer environment by prohibiting gender-based discrimination and requiring educational institutions who receive federal funding to be intentional about investigating claims of sex-based discrimination. It is important to recognize and reflect on the 50th year of the passage of Title IX."

-Associate Athletic Director Robin Arnold

"Athletics has been a huge part of my life both personally and professionally, and having a law like Title IX to protect women's sports has meant so much to me. Being able to watch women's sports on TV and see fully funded and supported programs makes such a difference and helps continue to grow female sports."

-Assistant Athletic Director Jami Hughes

"As a female working in collegiate athletics, I know that my professional trajectory could have looked very different without Title IX. Title IX has given so many women the opportunity to receive a higher education through athletic scholarships and tuition assistance. It has also given women like myself the opportunity to pursue a career in collegiate athletics and be able to support the next generation of student-athletes on and off the field."

-Head Athletic Trainer Sara Miraglia

"Title IX was pivotal to me in so many ways.  Both as a young woman who aspired to play basketball in college and now as a head coach at my alma mater in the sport that has molded me into the person that I am today. I appreciate all of those who have paved the way for the growth of women's sports. Today is a GREAT DAY to celebrate all who made this possible, and those who continue to fight for women's equality."

-Head Women's Basketball Coach Bernadette Laukaitis

"To me, Title IX is all about opportunity. I would not have the opportunity to coach if it was not for the women before me who fought for equality in the sport of softball. Due to the recent popularity of the sport, the Division I Softball College World Series was streamed on ABC for the first time. It is great to see the strides this sport has made, and I am excited to see it grow even more."
