Philadelphia, Pa. - Senior
Lauren Greco (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock South) scored the game-winning goal with 1:16 remaining in regulation to give the Holy Family University women's lacrosse team a 15-14 victory over Mercy College in a non-conference contest Wednesday afternoon at Tiger Field.
Holy Family improves to 1-2 overall as the victory marked the first career win for first year head coach Elizabeth Weber. Mercy starts the season at 0-1.
Senior
Gina Mansi (Washington Twp., N.J./Washington Twp.) led Holy Family with a game-high four goals. Mansi was 2-for-3 on free position shots and also recorded two ground balls. Senior
Katherine Podlinski (Cherry Hill, N.J./Camden Catholic) recorded two goals as well, while fellow classmate
Samantha Cornely (Washington Twp., N.J./Camden Catholic) contributed two goals and one assist.
Junior
Stephanie McNesby (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) had a goal and one assist while leading the team with eight draw controls. Greco and freshman
Brianna Lancetta (Marlton, N.J./Bishop Eustace) each had two goals for the Tigers.
For Mercy, junior Julie Darnulc led the team with six points after recording three goals and three assists. Sophomore Jamie McPartland led the Mavericks with four goals, while sophomore Kelsey Bub and freshman Kelsey Sullivan each contributed two goals. Freshman Michelle Tierman also scored two goals and finished the game with seven draw controls.
Holy Family led 14-11 after an unassisted goal by Cornely at the 10:45 mark of the second half, however three straight goals by Mercy over the next eight-plus minutes tied the game at 14-14. Darnulc scored all three of the Mavericks' goals late to lead the rally. Her goal at the 2:34 mark tied the game.
Despite the rally by Mercy, it was Holy Family that finished on top as Greco's goal with 1:16 remaining on the clock turned into the eventual game-winner. The Holy Family defense kept Mercy off the scoreboard the rest of the way to secure the victory.
Holy Family held the advantage on draws 19-12 and also took advantage of its free-position shots converting 6-of-10 on the afternoon.
Senior goalkeeper
Melissa Jenkins (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) made nine saves in net for the Tigers, while her counterpart, freshman Mia Wagner made seven stops.
Holy Family is back in action on Saturday, March 17 as the Tigers host Dominican College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest. Game time is slated for 12 p.m.
