BOX SCORELakewood, N.J. - The Holy Family University women's lacrosse team won its second straight one-goal game as the Tigers went into Lakewood, N.J. and stunned Georgian Court University by the score of 11-10 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest on Saturday afternoon.
Holy Family, winners of three straight games, improves to 5-7 overall and 5-3 in the CACC. With the win the Tigers take over sole possession of second place in the CACC South Division with one-half game lead over third-place Wilmington University (5-4).
Georgian Court is now 11-4 overall and 8-2 in conference play sitting atop the North Division.
Senior
Brigit LaRose (Lumberton, N.J./Holy Cross) and sophomore
Paige Settar (Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional) combined to score seven of the team's 11 goals to lead the offence. LaRose tied her season-high with a game-high four scores to go along with three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Settar finished the game with three goals, two ground balls and three draw controls.
Sophomore
Nicole Braungart (Medford, N.J./Bishop Eustace) totaled a pair of scores on the afternoon as well as picking up three ground balls on defense. Juniors
Caitlin Carrezola (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) and
Brianna Lancetta (Marlton, N.J./Bishop Eustace) each led the team with four ground balls apiece. Lancetta also finished with a team-high three caused turnovers, while Carrezola caused two turnovers.
For Georgian Court, sophomore Callie Brown led the Lions with four goals to go along with three ground balls and three draw controls. Sophomore Melissa Williams totaled three points with two goals and assist, while junior Emily Gialanella fueld the defense with five ground balls and three caused turnovers. She also scored a goal on offense.
With the game tied 8-8 midway through the second half, Holy Family tallied three straight scores in a three-minute span. As a result, the Tigers held a three score lead, the biggest of the game since the first half. Holy Family received goals from senior
Marissa Lawson (York, Pa./Central York) (13:46), Settar (12:29) and Braungart (10:39) to take an 11-8 lead with 10:39 to play in the half.
As the half progressed, Georgian Court cut into the Tigers' lead with back-to-back scores less than a minute apart. Senior Catherine Dee scored at the 6:24 mark, while Gialanella tallied her lone goal of the game with 5:52 to play cutting the lead to 11-10.
However, that would be the last goal of the game for either team as the Tigers and Lions were each held scoreless the final 5:52 of the second half.
Holy Family held on to the one score lead to pick up its third straight victory.
Sophomore
Grace Deckert (Jarrettsville, Md./Fallston) made 11 saves in net for the Tigers after facing 21 shots.
Holy Family outshot Georgian Court, 30-23, and held a 13-9 advantage on the draw. The Tigers and Lions each picked up 22 ground balls.
Holy Family is back in action on Monday, April 14 as the Tigers travel to face Chestnut Hill College in a CACC contest. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
