Brigit LaRose (Lumberton, N.J./Holy Cross) and junior
Christina Bonomo (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) each scored in overtime to lift the Holy Family University women's lacrosse team to a 12-11 victory over visiting Wilmington University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest on Thursday afternoon at Tiger Field.
The win improves Holy Family's record to 4-7 overall and most importantly 4-3 in conference action. The Tigers are now tied with Wilmington for the final postseason spot in the CACC South Division. Wilmington is now 6-7 overall and 5-4 in conference play. The Tigers hold the edge in the loss column, while the Wildcats have the advantage in the win column.
Prior to today's game, Holy Family recognized junior
Brianna Lancetta (Marlton, N.J./Bishop Eustace) for becoming the fourth player in program history to reach the 100-career goal milestone. Lancetta tallied her 100
th career goal on March 27 versus Philadelphia University.
Bonomo, Lancetta and LaRose each scored three goals a piece in the victory to lead the Tigers' offense. Junior
Marissa Lawson (York, Pa./Central York) added a pair of goals and led the game with seven draw controls, while sophomore
Paige Settar (Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional) connected on one goal and finished with a team-high five ground balls.
Sophomores
Nicole Braungart (Medford, N.J./Bishop Eustace) and
Erin Harmer (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) each picked up four ground balls for the Tigers.
For Wilmington, junior Rebekah McCurry led all scorers with six points after tallying a game-high five goals and one assist. She also picked up five ground balls and caused three turnovers. Junior Katie Spence finished with three goals, while fellow classmate Megan Keffer added two goals, five ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Holy Family controlled all five draws in the overtime period as the Tigers scored on two of their first three possessions. After winning the opening draw in overtime the Tigers went right on the offensive as LaRose took advantage of a Wilmington foul to score her third goal of the game breaking the 10-10 tie.
Leading 11-10 after the two teams switched ends on the field at the 3:00 minute mark, Holy Family once again controlled the draw leading to Bonomo's third score of the game. Her 15
th goal of the season gave the Tigers a 12-10 lead with 2:01 to play in the first overtime.
Wilmington would cut the lead in half when Keffer scored her second goal of the game and 28
th of the season to make the score 12-11 with less than 90 seconds to play in the extra period.
Holy Family controlled the ensuing draw and managed to keep possession of the ball until the final seconds. McCurry forced a Holy Family turnover with four seconds left but time was against the Wildcats as the clock expired as Wilmington gain possession down in the Tigers' offensive zone.
Sophomore
Grace Deckert (Jarrettsville, Md./Fallston) made six saves in net in the winning effort, while senior Corinne Dries made 13 stops in net for the Wildcats.
Holy Family trailed 4-1 to open the game, however the Tigers closed out the final 12:16 minutes of the first half outscoring the Wildcats, 6-1. Holy Family took a 7-5 lead entering halftime.
Wilmington scored two goals in the final three minutes of regulation to force overtime.
Holy Family outshot Wilmington, 35-22, including 4-1 in overtime. The Tigers also controlled the draw by a 19-8 margin and turned the ball over three less times than the Wildcats, 15-18.
Holy Family is back in action on Saturday, April 12 as the Tigers travel to face Georgian Court University in a CACC contest. Game time is slated for 12 p.m.
