Plymouth Meeting, Pa. - The Holy Family University women's lacrosse team suffered a 9-8 overtime loss to visiting Molloy College in a non-conference contest Saturday afternoon at Victory Field #1 on the campus of Plymouth Whitemarsh High School.
Holy Family is now 1-2 overall, while Molloy improves to 2-4 overall this season.
Junior
Brigit LaRose (Lumberton, N.J./Holy Cross) recorded a hat trick for the third straight game as she tallied three scores to lead the Tigers' offense. She currently leads the team with ten goals this season. LaRose also collected two ground balls and caused two turnovers. Senior
Maria Mattioli (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Nazareth) and sophomore
Brianna Lancetta (Marlton, N.J./Bishop Eustace) each scored a pair of goals for the Tigers.
Senior
Stephanie McNesby (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) led the team with eight draw controls to go along with a score. Sophomore
Sarah Kelly (Washington Twp., N.J./Washington Twp.) finished with three ground balls and cause two turnovers.
For Molloy, senior Kaitlynn Kelly also tallied a hat trick as she led the Lions with three goals and four ground balls. Fellow classmate Christie Roell also had a multiple goal game finishing with two scores. Senior Kerry Canham came up big defensively as she caused a game-high four turnovers.
Senior Alexa Toscano had the game's biggest goal as she tallied the game-winning score in overtime at the 3:01 mark. The goal came right before the teams would have stopped play to switch ends.
In the second part of the first overtime period, Holy Family had an opportunity to tie the game to force another overtime period, but the Molloy defense held the Tigers off the scoreboard and ran out the clock after gaining possession.
Trailing 7-5 at halftime, Holy Family knocked off three straight goals in the second half after both teams spent the first 14-plus minutes scoreless. The Tigers received goals from Mattioli and LaRose in the 16
th minute to tie the game at 7-7.
Two minutes later, Holy Family grabbed hold of the lead after Lancetta scored her second goal of the game to give the Tigers an 8-7 lead with 13:06 to play.
Molloy would go on to tie the score at 8-8 off a free-position shot by Kelly with 3:45 to play in regulation to force overtime.
Holy Family is back in action on Tuesday, March 12 as the Tigers travel to face East Stroudsburg University in a non-conference contest. Game time is slated for 4 p.m.
