East Stroudsburg, Pa. - Senior
Stephanie McNesby (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) scored the game-winning goal with :45 seconds left in the first sudden victory period to lift the Holy Family University women's lacrosse team to a 12-11 victory over East Stroudsburg University in a non-conference contest Tuesday afternoon at Whitenight Field.
Holy Family improves to 2-2 overall this season, while East Stroudsburg starts its season at 0-1.
Trailing 10-7 with 5:24 remaining in regulation, Holy Family scored the last three goals to tie the game at 10-10 to force overtime. Sophomore
Brianna Lancetta (Marlton, N.J./Bishop Eustace) started the rally scoring at the 5:24 mark, while McNesby added a goal 1:12 later to cut the Warriors lead to 10-9. Lancetta and McNesby each finished with three goals a piece.
Minutes later, senior
Maria Mattioli (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Nazareth) came through with the game-tying goal as the Tigers tied the game at 10-10. Mattioli finished with a pair of goals as well as causing two turnovers on the defensive end.
In overtime, Lancetta scored her third goal of the game with :39 seconds left before the first three minutes of overtime expired. However, East Stroudsburg tied the game at 11-11 in the second part of the first overtime as freshman Lauren Nunes scored her fifth goal of the game.
Nunes goal came with 1:23 to play in the final part of overtime.
After a scoreless first part of sudden victory overtime, both teams were held scoreless until Holy Family came through the game-winner with :45 seconds remaining. McNesby's goal was her third of the game and her fourth point (3G/1A).
Junior
Marissa Lawson (York, Pa./Central York) also recorded a hat trick for the Tigers as she finished the game with three goals, including the team's first two scores of the game. Senior
Jessica Maloney (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) led the team with five ground balls.
East Stroudsburg led 6-4 at the half as Holy Family outscored the Warriors, 8-5, in the second half and overtime.
Holy Family is back in action on Saturday, March 16 as the Tigers face nationally ranked # 1 and reigning national champion, LIU Post in a non-conference contest. Game time is slated for 4 p.m.
