Women's Lacrosse Wins 6th Straight With 13-9 Victory Over Chestnut Hill

BOX SCORE

Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University women's lacrosse team completed the season sweep of Chestnut Hill College after defeating the Griffins 13-9 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest Tuesday afternoon at Tiger Field.

Holy Family improves to 9-4 overall and 8-1 in conference play after extending its program-best six game winning streak.  The eight victories in conference play tie the program's record for most conference victories in a season.  The Tigers won eight CACC contests in 2010.  Chestnut Hill is now 2-10 overall and 2-7 in the CACC.

Junior Stephanie McNesby (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) led all scorers with four goals as she inched closer to 100 career goals.  She currently has 97 in her three-year career.  McNesby also finished with a game-high eight draw controls to go along with two ground balls.

Senior Samantha Cornely (Washington Twp., N.J./Camden Catholic) recorded a hat trick after scoring three goals in the victory.  Freshman Sarah Kelly (Washington Twp., N.J./Washington Twp.) tallied a pair of goals as well.  Junior Jessica Maloney (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) recorded three ground balls and controlled four draws for the Tigers.

For Chestnut Hill, junior Lindsay Alexander led the Griffins with a team-high three goals.  She also controlled two draws.  Senior Kelly McKay and junior Brianne Timony each scored two goals apiece.

Chestnut Hill scored the game's first goal and took an early 1-0 lead after Alexander scored her first goal of the game 2:35 in.  However, Holy Family scored four straight goals the next 15-plus minutes to take control of the game.  McNesby got the rally started after connecting on a free-position shot at the 24:15 mark.  Senior Katherine Podlinski (Cherry Hill, N.J./Camden Catholic) capped the rally with a goal with 15:52 left in the first half as Holy Family led 4-1.

Holy Family tacked on three more goals in the half and led 7-3 at the half.  The Tigers' defense limited Chestnut Hill to only 13 shots in the half as the Griffins managed only three goals.  Holy Family would go on to outshoot Chestnut, 33-28, for the game.

In the second half, Holy Family opened the half with two straight goals, however Chestnut Hill responded right back with two goals of its own to make the score 9-5 at the 25:49 mark of the half.

For the second time in the game, Holy Family would go on to score four unanswered goals to lead by as many as eight goals after Cornely scored her third goal of the game at the 10:27 mark to make the score 13-5.

Chestnut Hill would go on to score four unanswered goals in the final six-plus minutes of the half to cut the lead to 13-9 after a goal by Timony with only two seconds left.  As a result, the Griffins rally came to abrupt end as time expired in regulation on the ensuing draw.

Senior goalkeeper Melissa Jenkins (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) made 12 saves in net for the Tigers, while junior Jenn Delahanty came away with 14 stops for the Griffins.

Holy Family once again held the advantage on draws.  During the Tigers' current six-game winning streak, the team has controlled more draws than their opponents each game.

Holy Family is back in action on Thursday, April 19 as the Tigers host Wilmington University in a CACC contest.  Game time is slated for 4 p.m.
