Women's Lacrosse Defeats Rival Philadelphia, 22-16; Mansi Ties All-Time Goals Record

BOX SCORE

Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University women's lacrosse team won its fifth straight game as the Tigers defeated cross-town rival Philadelphia University, 22-16, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest Saturday afternoon.

With the victory, Holy Family improves to 8-4 overall and 7-1 in conference play, while Philadelphia drops to 5-8 overall and 4-4 in the CACC.  The Tigers current five-game winning streak is the team's longest in program history.

Senior Gina Mansi (Washington Twp., N.J./Washington Twp.) and freshman Brianna Lancetta (Marlton, N.J./Bishop Eustace) combined for ten goals to lead the Holy Family offense.  Mansi finished the game with four goals and as a result tied former teammate Jennifer James (Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower)' all-time mark for career goals with 152.  Mansi is also now two points away from tying James' all-time points record of 172.  She currently has 170 career points.

Lancetta exploded for a career-high six goals in the victory.  She also controlled two draws and caused one turnover.  Holy Family also had three other players record hat tricks with three goals scored, including seniors Samantha Cornely (Washington Twp., N.J./Camden Catholic) and Katherine Podlinski (Cherry Hill, N.J./Camden Catholic) as well as junior Stephanie McNesby (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan).  Cornely and McNesby also recorded a pair of assists.  In addition, McNesby led the team with ten draw controls.

Freshman Sarah Kelly (Washington Twp., N.J./Washington Twp.) recorded three points after scoring a goal and assisting on two others.  Kelly also led the team with four ground balls.

For Philadelphia, senior Taylor Peltzer led the Rams with six goals.  Sophomore Emily Ray scored four goals, while senior Caribeth Shappell added three goals and recorded two assists to finish with five points.

Philadelphia jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after scoring the game's first three goals within the first 2:33 of action.  However, Holy Family responded right back with three straight goals to tie the game at 3-3 after Mansi scored her first goal of the game at the 21:26 mark.

As the half progressed, Philadelphia regained a multiple goal lead after sophomore Carli DiCioccio scored an unassisted goal to make the score 8-6 with 9:30 to play in the first half.

In the final 9:30 of the half, Holy Family went on to outscore Philadelphia 5-1 to take an 11-9 lead entering halftime.  The Tigers scored two goals in the final :47 seconds to take the two goal lead after McNesby tied the game at 9-9 with a goal at the 2:51 mark.

In the second half, Philadelphia scored the first goal of the half nearly three minutes in to come within one goal of the Tigers lead at 11-10.  Holy Family answered right back as Lancetta scored her first of four goals in the half to make the score 12-10.

The Rams would once again cut the lead to one goal after Peltzer scored off a free-position shot to make the score 12-11 at the 21:25 mark.

That would be the last goal Philadelphia would score over the next eight-plus minutes as the Holy Family defense shutdown the Rams offense.  During that span, the Tigers scored five straight goals to take their biggest lead of the game at 17-11 with 14:10 remaining in regulation.

Holy Family would lead by as many as seven goals after Podlinski scored at the 10:10 mark to make the score 19-12.  Philadelphia would come within five goals of the Tigers' lead on two separate occasions in the final ten minutes but that would be as close as the home team would get as Holy Family came away with the 22-16 victory.

Senior Melissa Jenkins (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) made seven saves in net for the Tigers, while junior Ellen Wright made nine stops for the Rams.

Holy Family once again held the advantage in draws as the Tigers controlled 25 as oppose to only 16 by Philadelphia.  It marked the fifth straight game that Holy Family held the edge in draw controls over its opponent.

The Tigers also outshot the Rams (40-30) and maintained the edge on ground balls (16-14).  The Holy Family defense also forced 13 turnovers.

Holy Family is back in action on Tuesday, April 17 as the Tigers host Chestnut Hill College in a CACC contest.  Game time is slated for 4 p.m.
