Women's Lacrosse Completes Season Sweep of Georgian Court

Lakewood, N.J. - The Holy Family University women's lacrosse team completed the season sweep with its second win against Georgian Court University by the score of 17-14 Tuesday afternoon in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) road contest. 
 
Holy Family, now in sole possession of first place in the CACC standings, improves to 7-4 overall and 6-1 in the CACC, while Georgian Court falls to 8-4 overall and 7-2 in conference action.  The Tigers, who became the first team to defeat the Lions in a CACC regular season contest last month, are now the first team to beat Georgian Court in a conference regular season game on its home field.  Georgian Court was previously 39-0 in regular season conference games prior to Holy Family's victory back on March 31.
 
Senior Gina Mansi (Washington Twp., N.J./Washington Twp.) led Holy Family with a team-high five goals to go along with two draw controls and two caused turnovers.  She also had an assist to finish the afternoon with six points.  Junior Stephanie McNesby (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) recorded a hat trick after scoring three goals.  She also had two ground balls and controlled five draws. 
 
Senior Samantha Cornely (Washington Twp., N.J./Camden Catholic) tallied a pair of goals for the Tigers, while sophomore Marissa Lawson (York, Pa./Central York) finished with two goals and four draws.  Freshman Sarah Kelly (Washington Twp., N.J./Washington Twp.) came away with two goals as well to go along with two draw controls.
 
For Georgian Court, junior Corinne Coyle exploded for a game-high six goals to lead the Lions' offense.  Sophomores Stephanie Gallo and Molly McCourt each tallied a pair of goals.  McCourt also assisted on another to finish with three points.  Freshman Emily Gialanella scored two goals and finished with three ground balls.  Sophomore Catherine Dee led the team with five ground balls and five draw controls.
 
Holy Family scored five unanswered goals in the second half to power its way past Georgian Court.  Both teams entered halftime tied at 9-9 after the Tigers scored the half's final two goals in the final minute to tie the game.
 
Holy Family gained the lead with a goal by Mansi to start the second half with an unassisted score to give the Tigers a 10-9 lead.  However, Georgian Court answered right back with a goal by Coyle to tie the game at 10-10 at the 23:43 mark.
 
From that point, Holy Family went on a 5-0 run over the next 11-plus minutes to take its biggest lead of the game to that point at 15-10.  Senior Katherine Podlinski (Cherry Hill, N.J./Camden Catholic) jump-started the rally with a goal :18 seconds after the Lions tied the game.   Podlinski's goal gave Holy Family an 11-10 lead as the Tigers wouldn't relinquish the lead from there on out.  
 
Kelly and Lawson scored back-to-back goals :22 seconds apart at the 21:31 mark to make the score 13-10.  Mansi then tallied two straight goals to cap the run as the Tigers led 15-10 with 12:37 remaining in regulation.
 
Holy Family would go on to lead by as many as six goals after Lawson tacked on her second goal of the half to make the score 17-11 with 8:19 on the clock.
 
Georgian Court would follow with three straight goals in the game's final seven minutes but came up short as time ran out on the Lions' rally.  Georgian Court scored its final goal with :32 seconds remaining to make the score 17-14.
 
Senior goalkeeper Melissa Jenkins (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) made eight stops in net for the Tigers, while freshman Amanda Cathcart came away with ten saves for the Lions.
 
Holy Family held the advantage on draws by controlling 19 compared to only 11 by Georgian Court.  The Lions though held a slight edge on ground balls (22-20).  Both teams also played a clean game offensively as neither team committed more than four turnovers.  Holy Family only turned the ball over three times, while Georgian Court committed just four. 
 
Holy Family is back in action on Saturday, April 14 as the Tigers travel to face cross-town rival Philadelphia University in a CACC contest.  Game time is slated for 12 p.m.
