Women's Lacrosse Stuns Georgian Court, 12-11

Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University women's lacrosse team defeated Georgian Court University for the first time in program history in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest by the score of 12-11 Saturday afternoon at Tiger Field.
 
Holy Family improves to 4-4 overall and 3-1 in conference play, while Georgian Court drops to 6-2 overall and 5-1 in the CACC.  Prior to this game, the Tigers were 0-7 all-time against the Lions.
 
Senior Gina Mansi (Washington Twp., N.J./Washington Twp.) led the Holy Family offense with a game-high four goals, while fellow classmate Samantha Cornely (Washington Twp., N.J./Camden Catholic) and freshman Sarah Kelly (Washington Twp., N.J./Washington Twp.) each tallied three goals apiece.  Kelly also had an assist and grabbed three ground balls.
 
Junior Stephanie McNesby (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) tallied an assist and led the Tigers with five ground balls and ten draw controls.  Senior Lauren Greco (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock South) and freshman Brianna Lancetta (Marlton, N.J./Bishop Eustace) also scored for Holy Family.
 
For Georgian Court, juniors Olivia Rotunno and Samantha Shaw each scored three goals to lead the Lions' offense.  Shaw also assisted on three other goals to lead the team with six points.  Junior Corinne Coyle and sophomore Stephanie Gallo each had a pair of goals. 
 
Both teams battled back-and-forth throughout the first half as neither team compiled a multiple goal lead.  Holy Family escaped the first half with a one-goal advantage after Kelly scored her third goal of the half with 1:45 remaining.  Kelly's goal made the score 6-5 entering halftime.
 
In the second half, Holy Family opened with three straight goals to take the game's biggest lead by the score of 9-5.  Mansi scored a pair of goals, while Cornely added another off a free-position shot during the Tigers' run.
 
Holy Family maintained its multiple goal lead well into the half, however in the final six-plus minutes Georgian Court cut the Tigers' lead to one goal on two separate occassions. 
 
At the 6:46 mark, Rotunno scored a goal, which started a quick 3-0 run by the Lions to pull within one goal of the Tigers.  The trio of Rotunno, Gallo and Shaw all scored in a 1:46 span to make the score 11-10 with 5:00 to play in regulation.
 
Holy Family responded with a goal by Cornely at the 4:28 mark to make the score 12-10 which gave the Tigers a slight advantage. 
 
However, Georgian Court would once again cut the Tigers' lead to a single goal after Gallo scored her second goal in three-minute span to make the score 12-11 with 2:13 to play.
 
Holy Family would go on to win the ensuing draw and controlled possession of the ball until the final minute after Georgian Court regained control after a save by freshman goalkeeper Amanda Cathcart. 
Georgian Court managed to get a shot off with :25 seconds on the clock, however senior goalkeeper Melissa Jenkins (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) came away with a huge save for the Tigers allowing Holy Family to regain possession.  The Tigers would go on to run down the clock and hold on to the one goal victory.
 
Jenkins finished with nine saves for the Tigers, while Cathcart made seven stops for the Lions.
 
Holy Family is back in action on Tuesday, April 3 as the Tigers travel to face Chestnut Hill College in a CACC contest.  Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
