Cassandra Fitzgerald-Black (Whitby, Ontario/Fr. Leo J. Austin C.S.S.) blasted two home runs in game one as the Holy Family University softball team split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader at Chestnut Hill College Tuesday afternoon. Holy Family recorded an 11-0 shutout victory in game one, while Chestnut Hill was victorious, 6-1, in game two.
Holy Family concludes the season with a 13-29 overall record and 10-16 in the CACC, while Chestnut Hill wraps up the 2011 campaign at 6-32 overall and 3-23 in conference play.
Fitzgerald-Black entered today's doubleheader tied for the all-time lead with 17 home runs in program history and before the first inning was even over she held the mark all by herself. With junior
Bianca Robinson (Erial, N.J./Timber Creek) on first base, Fitzgerald-Black launched her 18th home run of the season to left-center field to give Holy Family a 2-0 lead.
Her homer jumped started a two-out rally as the Tigers tacked on another two runs after a two-run single by freshman
Hayley Brennan (Frankford, Del./Indian River) to give Holy Family a 4-0 lead. Brennan struck again in the top half of the second inning with a two-run double to right field to highlight another four run inning by the Tigers. Holy Family doubled its lead and led by the score of 8-0 after two innings.
Holy Family's offense continued its offensive assault with three more runs in the top half of the third inning thanks to Fitzgerald-Black's second home run of the game and 19th of her career. Sophomore
Danielle McDevitt (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) led the inning off with a single and two batters later Robinson singled down the left field line.
Fitzgerald-Black finished the game 3-for-3 at the plate to go along with six RBI and three runs. Brennan also had a 3-for-3 performance and contributed four RBI in the Tigers 11-0 victory. McDevitt was 2-for-4 with two runs, while junior
Shauna Vennell (Bellmawr, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) finished 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.
Freshmen
Rachael Alligood (Levittown, Pa./Harry S. Truman) and
Victoria Reuscher (Cheltenham, Pa./Little Flower HS for Girls) combined for the five-inning shutout victory. Alligood picked up her eighth win of the season after pitching three scoreless innings, while Reuscher pitched the final two frames to close out the game.
In game two, Holy Family scored the game's first run after sophomore
Deanna Myers (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) connected with her first home run of the season and 14th of her career in the top half of the second inning. Myers' homer gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
Chestnut Hill took over the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Griffins received run scoring hits from sophomore Cassie Benson, who doubled, and freshman Sarah Mattaliano to take a 2-1 lead.
Chestnut Hill poured on four more runs in the following inning highlighted by a two-run double by sophomore Giana Cavallo. The Griffins four-run fifth inning gave them a 6-1 lead and eventual win.
Sophomore Veronica Wilenta picked up her fourth win of the season after pitching four scoreless innings of relief. Wilenta limited Holy Family to only two hits. Freshman Brittany DeGarmo started the game and pitched three innings, while surrendering one run and scattering six hits for the Griffins.
McDevitt finished game two with a pair of hits to total 60 for the season tying her career-high. Through two full seasons, McDevitt has recorded 120 career hits for Holy Family. Junior
Katherine Cohen (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern) and sophomore
Lindsey Iden (Rushland, Pa./Council Rock North) each finished game two with two hits as well.
