Lakewood, N.J. - The Holy Family University women's lacrosse team came up short in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women's Lacrosse Semifinals to cross-town rival Philadelphia University, 19-12, Saturday afternoon. This year's tournament was hosted by Georgian Court University.
Holy Family, seeded third in the tournament, concludes the season with a 7-10 overall record, while second-seeded Philadelphia improves to 11-6 overall. The Rams will face top-seeded Georgian Court in the CACC Championship game after the Lions defeated Dominican College earlier in the afternoon, 22-7.
Senior
Jennifer James (Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower) led the Holy Family offense with a game-high five goals. She also had one assist, three ground balls and caused three turnovers. James finishes her career as the program's all-time leading scorer with 152 goals and 172 points. She concluded the 2011 season with the most points (79) and goals scored (69) setting new single-season records.
Junior
Gina Mansi (Washington Twp., N.J./Washington Twp.) scored a pair of goals for the Tigers, while freshman
Marissa Lawson (York, Pa./Central York) contributed two assists as well as two draw controls.
For Philadelphia, junior and conference player of the year, Caribeth Shappell along with freshman Emily Ray recorded a team-high six points to lead the Rams offense. Both players scored four goals and dished out two assists in the victory. Junior Taylor Peltzer also had four goals to go along with one assist.
Philadelphia scored eight unanswered goals midway through the first half, including the first two goals of the second half to take control of the game with a 12-6 lead. Shappell capped the Rams run at the 27:55 mark of the second half.
Prior to Philadelphia's rally, Holy Family went on a 5-1 run to take a 6-4 lead after James scored an unassisted goal at the 17:53 mark of the first half.
Holy Family came as close as five goals of Philadelphia's lead on two separate occasions in the second half, however the Tigers were unable to get any closer. Philadelphia outshot Holy Family, 41-30 for the game, including 25-16 in the first half.
Junior goalkeeper
Melissa Jenkins (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) made ten saves in net for the Tigers, while her counterpart freshman Cory Lombardo had eight saves. Jenkins finished the season with 186 saves and a .432 save percentage.
