Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University women's lacrosse team defeated Chestnut Hill College, 15-11, in a vital Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest at Tiger Field on Tuesday afternoon.
Holy Family improves to 6-8 overall and 5-5 in the CACC, while Chestnut Hill is now 6-9 overall and 4-6 in conference play. The win moves Holy Family one game ahead of Chestnut Hill for fourth place and the final postseason spot in the CACC standings.
Prior to today's contest, the Holy Family athletic department along with the women's lacrosse team honored three seniors that were competing in their final home regular season contest at Holy Family.
Jennifer James (Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower),
Kelly Kinkler (Barrington, N.J./Paul VI) and
Brooke Vermes (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) were recognized.
James led the way for Holy Family as she scored a game-high seven goals and in the process set a new single-season scoring record for goals scored in a season with 56 breaking her old mark of 52 set last season. In addition, she also set a new mark in total points in a season with 65 after recording eight points against the Griffins. James recorded 58 points last year.
Junior
Gina Mansi (Washington Twp., N.J./Washington Twp.) recorded a hat trick with three goals and also picked up three ground balls and controlled two draws. Fellow classmate
Katherine Podlinski (Cherry Hill, N.J./Camden Catholic) tallied a pair of goals in the victory. Sophomore
Jessica Maloney (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) grabbed five grounds balls and controlled five draws.
For Chestnut Hill, sophomore Lindsey Alexander scored a team-high five goals to go along with six ground balls and five draw controls. Fellow sophomore Erica Eaby scored a pair of goals for the Griffins.
Holy Family trailed early on in the contest as Chestnut Hill quickly mounted a 3-0 lead as Alexander scored two of the team's first three goals in the first two minutes of action.
However, Holy Family responded with nine unanswered goals including four from James and three from Mansi to give the Tigers a 9-3 advantage with 10:53 to play in the half. The 9-0 rally spanned nearly 17 minutes of the first half.
Before the first half was over, Chestnut Hill came within three goals of the Holy Family lead after scoring three straight goals after the Tigers rally to make the score 9-6. With less than ten seconds remaining before halftime, Holy Family tacked on another goal to take a 10-6 lead into the half. Freshman
Marissa Lawson (York, Pa./Central York) scored the team's tenth goal.
In the second half, Holy Family maintained its lead as Chestnut Hill came within only three goals of the Tigers' lead. Holy Family would go ahead and end the game with a 15-11 victory.
Junior goalkeeper
Melissa Jenkins (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) made nine saves in net for the Tigers. Holy Family held the edge on draw controls (17-11), shots (34-31) and ground balls (27-21).
Holy Family is back in action on Thursday, April 21 as the Tigers travel to Post University for a CACC contest. Game time is slated for 4 p.m. Holy Family defeated Post by the score of 17-6 last month.
