Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University women's lacrosse team fell short to cross-town rival Philadelphia University, 18-15, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest at Tiger Field Saturday afternoon.
Holy Family is now 2-6 overall and 1-3 in the CACC, while Philadelphia improves to 2-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
Senior
Jennifer James (Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower) scored a game-high six goals to lead the Holy Family offense. James also recorded an assist to total seven points on the afternoon. Junior
Lauren Greco (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock South) scored four goals as well as controlling four draw controls. Fellow classmate
Katherine Podlinski (Cherry Hill, N.J./Camden Catholic) scored a pair of free position goals and also had three draw controls.
For Philadelphia, freshman Emily Ray led the team with a five goal performance, while junior Taylor Peltzer came through with four goals and an assist. Freshmen Kalin Hodel and Carli DiCioccio each recorded a hat trick with three goals a piece.
Holy Family led 7-6 at halftime and opened the second half with three straight goals by junior
Gina Mansi (Washington Twp., N.J./Washington Twp.), sophomore
Maria Mattioli (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Nazareth) and Greco to take its biggest lead of the game by the score of 10-6 at the 24:32 mark.
However, Philadelphia scored six unanswered goals to take over the lead as Ray highlighted the run with three goals capping the rally with a goal at 18:03 to give the Rams a 12-10 advantage.
Later in the half and trailing by three goals, Holy Family came within one goal of the Rams' lead after Podlinski scored on back-to-back free position shots within :30 seconds of one another to make the score 14-13 with 11:15 left to play.
Minutes later, Philadelphia answered back scoring two straight goals to regain its three goal advantage by the score of 16-13 after junior Andi Saracco scored with less than ten minutes on the clock.
Holy Family would cut the Philadelphia lead to two goals after James scored a free position goal (16-14) with six minutes left in regulation. After four-plus minutes of neither team scoring, the Rams scored two goals in the final two minutes of regulation to put the game out of reach. Philadelphia led 18-14 with 1:05 remaining.
Holy Family added a goal with :35 seconds remaining as James scored her sixth and final goal of the contest to make the score 18-15, but that's as close as the Tigers would get as the Rams held on for the victory.
Holy Family is back in action on Wednesday, March 30 as the Tigers travel to face Wilmington University in a CACC contest. Game time is slated for 3 p.m.
