Orangeburg, N.Y. - The Holy Family University women's lacrosse team dropped a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest to Dominican College, 15-14, at the Torne Valley Sports Complex Thursday evening.
Holy Family is now 2-5 overall and 1-2 in the CACC, while Dominican improves to 2-1 overall with the win and in the process picked up its first conference victory of the season (1-0).
Holy Family had three players' record hat tricks as senior
Jennifer James (Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower), junior
Lauren Greco (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock South) and sophomore
Stephanie McNesby (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) all scored three goals. Juniors
Gina Mansi (Washington Twp., N.J./Washington Twp.) and
Katherine Podlinski (Cherry Hill, N.J./Camden Catholic) each added two goals apiece for the Tigers.
For Dominican, senior Silje Karlsen led the offense with a game-high four goals, while fellow classmate Sarah Kiernan and junior Aubree Williams each tallied three goals apiece.
Holy Family scored four straight goals late in the first half to take a 9-6 lead after junior
Samantha Cornely (Washington Twp., N.J./Camden Catholic) capped the run with a free position goal with only :43 seconds remaining in the half.
However, Dominican responded quickly with two goals in the final :21 seconds of the half, including a goal by Maggie Brocklebank with five seconds showing on the clock to cut the Holy Family lead to 9-8.
McNesby gave Holy Family a boost scoring an unassisted goal within the first minute of the second half to give the Tigers a 10-8 lead. As the half progressed, Dominican came through with three straight goals to take the lead with 18:40 left to play by the score of 11-10.
Holy Family tied the game at 11-11 after Podlinski scored off an assist from McNesby at the 15:50 mark. Dominican came right back and scored back-to-back goals less than a minute a part to take a 13-11 lead.
Holy Family would cut the Dominican lead to one goal on three separate occasions the rest of the way but each time the Chargers responded with a goal of their own to hold off the Tigers.
Greco scored a goal to make the score 15-14 with :13 seconds left in the game, however the Tigers were unable to get off a shot after winning the ensuing draw.
Junior goalkeeper
Melissa Jenkins (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) made 12 saves in net for the Tigers, while her counterpart, freshman Amanda Caprio, made 11 saves.
Holy Family is back in action on Saturday, March 26 as the Tigers play host to cross-town rival Philadelphia University. Game time is slated for 12 p.m.
