Danielle McDevitt (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) became the second player in program history to record 200 career hits after going 3-for-7 at the plate as the Holy Family University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Adelphi University on Thursday afternoon. Adelphi took the opener by the score of 7-1, while Holy Family bounced back with a 1-0 shutout in the nightcap.
Â
Holy Family, winners of three of its last four games, is now 16-8 overall. Adelphi is now 14-10 overall after the split.
Â
McDevitt entered Thursday's doubleheader with 197 career hits and left it as one of two players in program history with 200-career hits. She joins the program's all-time hits leader, Melissa Zebley (2001-2004), in the exclusive 200-hits club. McDevitt is now only five hits away from tying Zebley's career mark of 205. Her 200
th hit came in the first inning of game two with a bunt single. She would later score the game's only run in the Tigers' 1-0 victory.
Â
Game 1: Adelphi 7, Holy Family 1
Â
In game one, Adelphi jumped out to a 4-0 lead without recording a single hit in the inning. The Panthers took advantage of two Holy Family errors and five walks to produce their runs. Adelphi added another run in the second inning after a run scoring double by freshman Niki Barbato to increase the lead to 5-0. Barbato finished 2-for-3 at the plate.
Â
Holy Family broke through in the fifth inning with a run after senior
Samantha Borrelli (West Berlin, N.J./Overbrook) singled up the middle to score junior
Kelsi Bunda (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury).Â
Â
Freshman Lindsay Mapes (5-5) picked up the win with 6.0 innings of work as she struck out four batters. She allowed one run off five hits to earn her fifth victory of the season.
Â
McDevitt produced two hits for the Tigers (2-3), while Borrelli, sophomore
Kristine Casey (Newark, Del./Caravel) and freshman
Amanda Paredes (Moorpark, Calif./Thousand Oaks) each had a base hit.
Â
Game 2: Holy Family 1, Adelphi 0
Â
Freshman
Bailey Walters (Ridgecrest, Calif./Burroughs) shutdown the Adelphi offense in game two as she recorded her first career shutout. Walters (5-2) went the distance as she scattered four hits in seven innings, while striking out four batters. With the seven scoreless innings, Walters lowered her earned run average to 2.92 on the year.Â
Â
Holy Family scored the game's only run in the first inning after three straight one-out hits by McDevitt, Borrelli and senior
Erin Corrado (Fair Hill, Md./St. Mark's (Del.)). With runners on second and third, Corrado delivered a base hit to right driving in McDevitt for the lone run of the game. Corrado finished the game 2-for-3. In addition, McDevitt's hit extended her hitting streak to nine games.Â
Â
Walters allowed only three runs reach scoring position on the afternoon and retired the Panthers in order three times to help preserve the 1-0 victory.
Â
Senior Katie Andrews received the hard-luck loss as she went four innings allowing just the one run off eight hits. She also struck out four batters. Mapes then entered in relief as she issued only one walk in the final three frames.
Â
Holy Family is back in action on Thursday, April 10 as the Tigers travel to face Wilmington University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader. Game one is slated for 2:30 p.m.
