Tigers Drop Doubleheader With Nationally Ranked Caldwell

GAME 1 BOX SCORE
GAME 2 BOX SCORE

Newtown, Pa. - The Holy Family University softball team dropped a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader to nationally ranked No. 11 Caldwell College on Monday afternoon at Helen Randle Park.  The Cougars took game one by the score of 4-2 and followed with a 3-1 victory in game number two.

Holy Family's season-long seven game winning streak came to an end, as the Tigers are now 22-10 overall and 13-5 in conference play.  Caldwell improves to 28-4 overall and 14-1 in CACC action.

Game 1: Caldwell 4, Holy Family 2

In the opener, Caldwell struck first when junior Alyssa Calderon drove a two-out triple to the right field fence, scoring sophomore Caitlin McCready to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.

Caldwell tacked on three more runs in the third inning to give starting pitcher, sophomore Amber Padilla, a four-run advantage.  Sophomore Brielle Reighn highlighted the inning with a two-run double and would later score on a wild pitch.

Padilla limited the Tigers to only three hits, while allowing two unearned runs.  Holy Family took advantage of a Caldwell miscue in the field during the fourth inning.  With runners at first and second and only one out, sophomore Kristine Casey (Newark, Del./Caravel) reached on an error by the Caldwell shortstop resulting in senior Samantha Borrelli (West Berlin, N.J./Overbrook) to score.

Borrelli reached base after hitting a double down the right field line; her 13th of the season.  Freshman Bailey Walters (Ridgecrest, Calif./Burroughs) drove in sophomore Alexis Daubert (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) with a ground out to first base as the Tigers cut the Caldwell lead in half at 4-2.

Those would be the only two runs to cross the plate for the Tigers as Padilla (10-2) picked up her tenth win of the season.  She struck out three batters and issued four walks.

Freshman pitcher Amanda Paredes (Moorpark, Calif./Thousand Oaks) (6-2) received the loss after going the full seven innings.  Paredes allowed four runs on seven hits, while striking out three batters.

Redshirt senior Danielle McDevitt (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) had two hits (2-3) for the Tigers, while Borrelli had the Tigers other hit; a double in the fourth inning.

Game 2: Caldwell 3, Holy Family 1

In game two, Holy Family jumped out to the first lead of the game after senior Erin Corrado (Fair Hill, Md./St. Mark's (Del.)) homered to right field to give the Tigers a 1-0 advantage in the second inning.  It marked Corrado's team leading fourth long ball of the season and the 11th of her career.

The lead would be short-lived though as Caldwell responded with three runs in the third inning.  Freshman Lauren Frye and McCready each drove in a run in the inning.  The Cougars capped the scoring when junior Kristen Knorr broke for home plate after Reighn attempted to steal second base.  The Tigers managed to catch Reighn in a run down, but only after Knorr crossed the plate for the third run of the inning.

Freshman Sydney Ponto (10-2) would limit the Tigers to four hits allowing just the one run.  Ponto struck out four batters and walked three in the complete game effort.

Freshman Bailey Walters (Ridgecrest, Calif./Burroughs) (7-3) received the loss after allowing three runs (2 earned) on a pair of hits.  Walters struck out two and walked two in seven innings of work.

Corrado (1-2), Casey (1-3), Walters (1-3) and junior Kristy Tomlinson (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin Towne Charter) (1-3) all had hits for the Tigers.

Holy Family is back in action on Wednesday, April 16 as the Tigers host Dominican College in a CACC doubleheader.  Game one is slated for 3 p.m. at Helen Randle Park.
