Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University softball team used a mixture of power hitting and clutch pitching to record a sweep over Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) rival Chestnut Hill College on the road on Thursday afternoon at the Chestnut Hill Softball Field. The Tigers won game one by the score of 7-1 and capped the afternoon with a 2-0 victory in game two.
Holy Family improves to 7-9 overall and 3-1 in the CACC, while Chestnut Hill falls to 6-10 overall and even in conference play at 3-3.
Holy Family had ten players record hits on the afternoon, including junior
Samantha Borrelli (West Berlin, N.J./Overbrook) who finished 5-for-7 at the plate. Borrelli knocked in three runs after slugging a home run in each game. Fellow classmate
Erin Corrado (Fair Hill, Md./St. Mark's (Del.)) (2-for-5) also launched a home run in game two.
Senior
Deanna Myers (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) (2-for-7) tallied a pair of hits on the afternoon and in the process recorded her 100
th career hit. Myers run scoring single in the seventh inning of game one turned out to be career hit 100.
Game One: Holy Family 7, Chestnut Hill 1
In game one, the Holy Family offense gave junior
Rachael Alligood (Levittown, Pa./Harry S. Truman) (2-2) all the offense she would need as she picked up her second win of the season. Alligood pitched a complete game seven innings as she allowed only three hits and one run. She also struck out five batters and lowered her team leading earned run average to 1.47.
Holy Family opened the scoring in the fourth inning after three straight hits. Sophomore
Kristy Tomlinson (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin Towne Charter) reached base on a bunt single scoring Borrelli who led the inning off with a single to left field.
In the following inning, Holy Family added two more runs thanks to Borrelli's first home run of the season; a two-run shot over the left field fence to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead.
The Holy Family offense continued to surge in the sixth inning as the Tigers doubled their lead with three more runs. Freshman
Alexis Daubert (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) highlighted the inning with a two-run double. Holy Family added one more run in the seventh inning after Myers recorded her 100
th career hit with a run scoring single.
Chestnut Hill scored its lone run in the fifth inning after a double up the middle by sophomore Elisabeth Raub scored freshman Francesca Faillace.
Game Two: Holy Family 2, Chestnut Hill 0
In the later game, Holy Family received more clutch pitching as junior
Victoria Reuscher (Cheltenham, Pa./Little Flower HS for Girls) (4-2) followed Alligood's lead in game two. Reuscher also pitched a complete seven-inning game, allowing four hits and striking out four in the process. She improved to 4-2 on the season after recording her first shutout victory of the season.
Corrado gave Holy Family the only run it would need in the game as she connected on her first home run of the season in the second inning to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. The Tigers followed with back-to-back hits by senior
Lindsey Iden (Rushland, Pa./Council Rock North) and sophomore
Kelsi Bunda (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury), but Chestnut Hill managed to get out of the inning with just the lone run. Bunda finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate.
Holy Family doubled its lead in the sixth inning after Borrelli hit her second home run on the afternoon. This time it was a solo shot to center field to make the score 2-0.
Chestnut Hill threatened in the fourth inning with back-to-back two out singles, but Reuscher forced a groundout to record the final out of the inning. The Griffins also had two base runners on in the fifth inning, but similar to the previous inning, Holy Family held the Chestnut Hill offense at bay.
Senior Mandi Rush pitched a complete game for the Griffins as she allowed eight hits and only two runs.
Holy Family is back in action on Saturday, March 30 as the Tigers host Bloomfield College in a CACC doubleheader. Game one is slated to start at 12 p.m. at Helen Randle Park in Newtown.
