Caldwell, N.J. - The Holy Family University women's basketball team's 12-game winning streak came to an end as Caldwell College defeated the Tigers, 53-52, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) road contest Saturday afternoon at the George R. Newman Center.
Holy Family, ranked 11
th in the recent USA Today/ESPN NCAA Division II National Top-25 Coaches' Poll, is now 12-2 overall and 6-1 in conference play. Caldwell is now 5-11 overall and 3-4 in the CACC.
Seniors
Ana Cruz (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) and
Molly Hanlon (Narberth, Pa./Lower Merion) each finished with ten points apiece to lead the Holy Family offense. Cruz knocked down a pair of three-pointers and also dished out four assists, while Hanlon totaled three rebounds and three assists.
Senior
Erin Mann (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) finished with eight points and six rebounds to go along with three blocks, while junior
Mary Ellen McCollum (Abington, Pa./St. Basil Academy) contributed eight points, four rebounds and two assists for the Tigers.
For Caldwell, junior Jeanette Anderson led all scorers with 12 points to go along with a game-high ten rebounds to record a double-double. Freshman Nicole Angelo came off the bench and contributed ten points for the Cougars after knocking down a pair of three-pointers.
Caldwell led 30-28 at halftime after a first half that saw six different lead changes and six ties throughout the half.
Holy Family opened the second half with a 22-8 run over the first 10:20 minutes of the half to take the game's first double-digit lead. A three-pointer by Cruz gave the Tigers' their biggest lead of the game by the score of 50-38.
However, Holy Family's lead began to quickly dwindle as Caldwell rallied with an 11-0 run over the next four minutes to come within one point of tying the game. A three-pointer by junior Marielle Duryea made the score 50-49 with 6:21 to play.
The Tigers responded on the following possession as Brady scored a layup to increase the team's lead to 52-49 with 5:53 on the clock.
Neither team would score over the next 3:49 until senior Torey Jones scored a layup for Caldwell to make the score 52-51. The Cougars would go on to tie the game and take the lead with 1:14 to play after senior Gillian Felix converted a pair of free throws to give Caldwell a 53-52 advantage.
Holy Family had a number of opportunities in the final minute to regain the lead, but the Caldwell defense held the Tigers to 0-4 shooting. In return, the Tigers' defense limited Caldwell to just one shot in the final minute to prevent the Cougars from increasing their lead.
Holy Family is back in action on Thursday, Jan. 10 as the Tigers host Goldey-Beacom College in a CACC contest. Game time is slated for 6 p.m.
