LAKE ERIE BOX SCORE
Erie, Pa. - The Holy Family University women's volleyball team split its final two matches of the Mercyhurst-Gannon Invitational hosted by Mercyhurst College and Gannon University Saturday afternoon in Erie.
Holy Family dropped its first match of the day to Gannon by the score of 3-1, but bounced back later in the day to defeat Lake Erie College by an identical 3-1 score. The win against Lake Erie marked the Tigers' first win of the season snapping its eight game losing streak to start the year.
In the match against Lake Erie, Holy Family took set one with ease winning 25-12. The Tigers were then tested in set two, but prevailed to a 25-22 victory to take a 2-0 match lead. In the set, Holy Family trailed by three early on by the score of 7-4, but eventually tied the score and took the lead after back-to-back service aces by freshman
Rachel Johnson (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way West).
Lake Erie would go on to tie the set at 8-8 after a kill by Jamie Hoppe but gave the lead right back on the ensuing serve, which resulted in an error to give the Tigers a 9-8 lead. From that point on the Tigers led the rest of the set and at one point had a six-point advantage by the score of 20-14.
In set three, Lake Erie won by the score of 27-25 to win its first set of the match and cut into Holy Family's lead. However, the Tigers would go on to clinch the match with a 25-15 victory in set four. With the set tied at 10-10, Holy Family used a 15-5 run to close out the match.
Senior
Cara Przybylowicz (Ridley Park, Pa./Ridley) and junior
Sarah Ambach (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) combined for 23 kills to lead the Holy Family attack. Przybylowicz finished the match with ten kills to go along with five digs. Ambach led the team with a game-high 13 kills after recording an impressive .500 attack percentage.
The Holy Family freshmen also came up big as
Emma Herring (Newtown, Conn./Newtown), Johnson and
Charlotte Sabatano (Fredrick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) each finished with eight kills. Johnson also had a team-high four service aces to go along with ten digs. Sabatano finished with three service aces and also had ten digs.
Fellow freshman
Madi Mcshane (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) led the team with a game-high 17 digs on the defensive side of the ball, while junior
Chelsea Keegan (Bucyrus, Ohio/Colonel Crawford) finished with a game-high 43 set assists.
For Lake Erie, Sara Aultz and Andrea Harris each led the team with eight kills. Samantha Knepley led the team with 24 assists.
Earlier in the day, Holy Family came up short against Gannon as the Tigers dropped the first two sets by the scores of 25-18 and 25-19. Holy Family managed to win the third set by the score of 30-28, but was unable to get by Gannon as the home team took the match in four sets after winning the fourth by the score of 25-22.
Ambach led the Tigers with 12 kills, while Herring, Johnson and Przybylowicz all contributed ten kills. Johnson also had 14 digs, while Przybylowicz tallied ten digs. Keegan finished with 43 assists to combine for 86 assists between the two matches.
As a team, Holy Family recorded 20 block assists, including six by Ambach. Johnson had five block assists, while Herring had four.
For Gannon, Lauren Sazama finished with a game-high 17 kills after recording a .429 attack percentage. She also had 13 digs. Sarah Glancy added nine kills and had four digs in the process.
Holy Family is back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 11 as the Tigers travel to face cross-town rival Philadelphia University in a CACC contest. Match time is slated for 6 p.m.
