Newark. Del. - The Holy Family University women's volleyball team dropped its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opener on the road to Wilmington University, 3-1 (27-25, 16-25, 19-25, 20-25), Wednesday night.
Holy Family is now 0-5 overall and 0-1 in conference play, while Wilmington improves to 4-2 overall and starts CACC play at 1-0.
Senior
Cara Przybylowicz (Ridley Park, Pa./Ridley) led the Tigers attack with a team-high ten kills, while freshmen
Emma Herring (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) and
Rachel Johnson (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way West) each added nine kills. Johnson also recorded 17 digs on the defensive side. Sophomore
Devyn Ingram (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) contributed eight kills and recorded double-digits in digs with 12.
Junior
Chelsea Keegan (Bucyrus, Ohio/Colonel Crawford) finished with a game-high 41 assists to go along with eight digs. Senior
Mackenzie Bickes (Orchard Lake, Mich./Mercy) also recorded a game-high with 18 digs.
For Wilmington, senior Nicole Wiechecki and freshman Kaitlin DiGiacinto each tallied a game-high 12 kills to lead the Wildcats. Both players also record double-digits in digs as Wiechecki came away with 16, while DiGiacinto contributed 17. Freshman Alex Siolos led the Wildcats with 26 assists and five block assists.
In the first set, Holy Family came back from five down to tie Wilmington on three separate occasions late. The Tigers tied the set at 24-24 after a service ace by Keegan. On the following possession, Holy Family took the lead for the first time after a kill by Ingram to make the score 25-24. An attack error by the Tigers would tie the set for the Wildcats, however back-to-back errors by the home team sealed the set for Holy Family, 27-25.
Wilmington took set two (25-16) using a 15-6 run to close the set out after tying the set at 10-10. The Wildcats then took set number three using a late run to clinch the set and take a 2-1 lead in the match. Holy Family tied the match at 17-17 after an attack error by Wilmington, however the Wildcats closed out the set on an 8-2 run to take the set 25-19.
Wilmington clinched the match with a 25-20 set four victory. The Wildcats led throughout the set not allowing the Tigers to take the lead despite tying the set on three different occasions.
Holy Family is back in action on Friday, Sept. 7 as the Tigers travel to Erie to compete in the Mercyhurst Tournament hosted by Mercyhurst College. Holy Family will face Mercyhurst (4 p.m.) and Ohio Dominican University (6 p.m.) on day one of the two-day tournament.
