Softball Clinches Postseason Spot After Sweeping Concordia; Fitzgerald-Black Collects 100th Hit

Bronxville, N.Y. - The Holy Family University softball team will be heading back to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) tournament after sweeping Concordia College in a pair of conference contests Saturday afternoon at the Clipper Softball Field.  Holy Family took the opener by the score of 7-0 and then completed the sweep with a 6-5 victory in game two.

Holy Family is now 20-24 overall and concludes conference play with a 13-13 mark.  Concordia wraps up the season with a 10-23 overall record and a 7-19 mark in CACC action.

Holy Family finished tied in the CACC standings with its 13-13 mark, but even with a few games yet to be determined, the Tigers secured the eighth seed in the tournament after the conference tie-break procedure.  More details on this year's tournament will be available early next week.

It was also a historic afternoon for the Tigers as senior Cassandra Fitzgerald-Black (Whitby, Ontario/Fr. Leo J. Austin C.S.S.) collected her 100th career hit.  Fitzgerald-Black came in as a pinch-hitter and came through with a key run-scoring single in game two.

Juniors Danielle McDevitt (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) and Deanna Myers (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) each finished 5-for-8 on the afternoon against the Clippers.  McDevitt scored three times and drove in two runs, while Myers launched her fourth home run of the season to finish the day with two runs and one RBI.  It marked her 18th home run of her career.

Sophomore Samantha Borrelli (West Berlin, N.J./Overbrook) went 3-for-8 to go along with a double and three RBI, while junior Lindsey Iden (Rushland, Pa./Council Rock North) finished with a pair of hits (2-7) to go along with two RBI and a run scored.

Game One: Holy Family 7, Concordia 0 - BOX SCORE

In the opener starting pitcher Victoria Reuscher (Cheltenham, Pa./Little Flower HS for Girls) (11-13) held Concordia to only two hits in seven innings of work as she picked up her 11th win of the season.  The Holy Family offense supplied Reuscher with seven runs as the Tigers scored three runs in the third inning.  McDevitt highlighted the inning with a two-run double as Holy Family led 2-0.  McDevitt would score later in the inning after an error by the Clippers.

Holy Family would double its lead in the fifth inning with another three-run showing.  The first three batters reached base setting the stage for Borrelli who came through with a two-run single to make the score 5-0.  Sophomore Erin Corrado (Fair Hill, Md./St. Mark's (Del.)) would cap the inning as she drove in fellow classmate Valerie Miller (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson).  Miller came in to pinch-run for McDevitt earlier in the inning. McDevitt finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate to go along with two runs and two RBI.

Holy Family added another run in the seventh inning after a run-scoring hit by Iden.

Game Two: Holy Family 6, Concordia 5 - BOX SCORE

Holy Family broke a 5-5 tie in the top-half of the seventh inning as sophomore AnnMarie Dalton (Northampton, Pa./Northampton Area) drove in the eventual game-winning run with a single to center field.  With two outs in the inning, Dalton came through with a base hit scoring Myers who singled earlier in the inning.  The run gave Holy Family a 6-5 lead entering the bottom of the seventh.

Freshman Sarah Chilutti (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) (5-6) came in to pitch the final two innings as she shut down the Clippers offense in the seventh to record the win.  After getting the first batter to ground out, Chilutti allowed a single by senior Angela D'Amico.  However, Chilutti would go on to retire the next two batters as Holy Family recorded the come-from-behind victory.

The Clippers scored four runs in the bottom-half of the first inning to lead 4-0 early on in the game.  Sophomore Nelyssa Rosario and senior Stueber each had run scoring hits in the inning for Concordia.

Holy Family would respond with its first run of the game in the second inning after Myers homered to left field.  The Tigers tacked on two more runs in the third inning to come within one run of the Clippers lead.  Corrado and freshman Kelsi Bunda (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) each had a run-scoring hit in the inning to make the score 4-3.

Holy Family tied the game at 4-4 in the fourth inning after a run-scoring double by Borrelli.  The Tigers would then take the lead for the first time after Fitzgerald-Black came through with a pinch-hit single scoring Bunda to make the score 5-4 in favor of Holy Family.  As mentioned, Fitzgerald-Black's run-scoring hit marked her 100th career hit.

Concordia would tie the game in the bottom-half of the fifth after taking advantage of a pair of Holy Family errors before the Tigers scored the game-winner in the seventh inning.

Holy Family was supposed to host Queens College tomorrow in a non-conference doubleheader, however due to the impending rainy weather in the Philadelphia area the doubleheader will be cancelled.  The Tigers will return to action on Thursday, April 26 with first day action of the CACC Tournament hosted by Georgian Court University.
