Softball Splits DH With Bloomfield; Borrelli Launches Grand Slam in Game One

Bloomfield, N.J. - The Holy Family University softball team split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader at Bloomfield College Monday afternoon.  The Tigers took the first game by the score of 8-3, while Bloomfield won game two by the score of 2-1.

Holy Family is now 16-16 overall and 9-7 in conference play, while Bloomfield is now 21-14 overall and 7-7 in CACC action.  The Tigers currently hold the fifth spot in the CACC standings, while the Deacons are seventh.  The top-eight teams in the conference standings qualify for the CACC Tournament at the end of the month.

Sophomore Samantha Borrelli (West Berlin, N.J./Overbrook) highlighted the afternoon with a grand slam home run in game one.  It marked her first long ball of the season and in the process tied her career high with 15 runs batted in on the season.

Junior Lindsey Iden (Rushland, Pa./Council Rock North) and sophomore Erin Corrado (Fair Hill, Md./St. Mark's (Del.)) each finished the afternoon with three hits apiece.  Iden was 3-for-6 at the plate to go along with a double, while Corrado finished 3-for-7 to go along with a pair of runs.

Senior Cassandra Fitzgerald-Black (Whitby, Ontario/Fr. Leo J. Austin C.S.S.), the team's all-time home run hitter, launched her 21st home run of her career and second of the season in game two.  Fitzgerald-Black hit a solo shot in the top-half of the seventh to record the team's lone run.

Game One: Holy Family 8, Bloomfield 3 - BOX SCORE

Holy Family scored five runs in the top-half of the fourth inning on its way to the game one victory.  Already leading 2-1 entering the fourth, the Tigers loaded the bases after three of the first four batters got on base to start the inning.

Junior Bianca Robinson (Erial, N.J./Timber Creek) tallied a run scoring single to jump-start the scoring in the inning as the Tigers led 3-1 after her base hit.  Two batters later, Borrelli stepped in the box and came through with her first home run of the season and second of her career.  The grand slam gave the Tigers a 7-1 lead and all the support sophomore-starting pitcher Victoria Reuscher (Cheltenham, Pa./Little Flower HS for Girls) would need.

Reuscher  (9-7) picked up her ninth win of the season after going the distance.  In seven innings of work, Reuscher scattered five hits and allowed three runs, while striking out one batter.

Krystina Poloni finished 2-for-3 at the plate for the Deacons, including a two-run homer in the sixth inning.

Game Two: Bloomfield 2, Holy Family 1 - BOX SCORE

Alexandria Smith struck out seven batters on her way to her seventh victory of the season as Bloomfield defeated Holy family, 2-1, in the back end of the doubleheader.  Smith pitched six scoreless innings before allowing her first and only run of the game in the top-half of the seventh inning.

Fitzgerald-Black cut the Bloomfield lead to 2-1 after connecting on her 21st career home run.  Prior to that at-bat, Holy Family managed only three hits of Smith who also walked three batters.

Smith also went 3-for-3 at the plate and helped her own cause leading the game off with a solo home run.  The Deacons scored the eventual game-winner in the bottom-half of the sixth after a run scoring single by Poloni.

Sophomore Rachael Alligood (Levittown, Pa./Harry S. Truman) (3-3) came up on the losing end of the one-run game.  In six innings of work, Alligood allowed two runs off eight hits, while striking out two.

Holy Family is back in action on Wednesday, April 11 as the Tigers host Goldey-Beacom College in a CACC doubleheader.  Game one is slated for 3 p.m.
