Kissimmee, Fla. - The Holy Family University softball team started off its season on a winning note as the Tigers picked up a pair of victories against Ashland University and Fayetteville State University at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Florida.
Holy Family (2-0) defeated Ashland 2-0 earlier in the day and then defeated Fayetteville State by the score of 5-2 to start the season off with a 2-0 mark.
Against Ashland, Holy Family jumped out ahead early in the first inning as junior
Danielle McDevitt (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) got things started with a walk to start the inning. She then stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball setting up a run scoring opportunity for sophomore
Samantha Borrelli (West Berlin, N.J./Overbrook).
Borrelli came through with a double that scored McDevitt as the Tigers took a 1-0 lead. Later in the game, Holy Family doubled its lead after Borrelli scored on a passed ball.
Freshman
Erica Reis (Furlong, Pa./Central Bucks East ) led the team with a 2-for-3 day at the plate in her first game as a Tiger.
The two runs would be all sophomore
Victoria Reuscher (Cheltenham, Pa./Little Flower HS for Girls) would need as she pitched a complete game shutout. She struck out one batter and scattered seven hits to pick up her first win of the victory.
Against Fayetteville State, the Tigers once again jumped out to a quick start in the first inning. Holy Family lead the game off with back-to-back-to-back singles by McDevitt, senior
Bianca Robinson (Erial, N.J./Timber Creek) and Reis. Junior
Lindsey Iden (Rushland, Pa./Council Rock North) and sophomore
AnnMarie Dalton (Northampton, Pa./Northampton Area) also had hits in the inning as the Tigers scored the game's first four runs in the first frame.
Reis went 2-of-3 in the game to go along with an RBI as she finished 4-for-6 on the day.
Freshman
Sarah Chilutti (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) won her first collegiate game as she struck out six batters and scattered five hits.
Holy Family is back in action on Monday, March 5 as the Tigers continue its non-conference schedule in Florida. The Tigers will face Concordia - St. Paul at 11 a.m. and then take on St. Cloud State at 1 p.m.
