Hartford, Conn. - The Holy Family University women's basketball team dropped an exhibition contest to Division I the University of Connecticut by the score of 119-50 Wednesday night at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn.
Seniors
Ana Cruz (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) and
Erin Mann (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) led the Tigers's offense with 11 points apiece. Cruz shot 3-of-6 from the field, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc in 18 minutes of action. Mann finished 3-of-8 from the field and converted 4-of-5 from the free throw line. She also recorded a pair of blocks.
Senior
Molly Hanlon (Narberth, Pa./Lower Merion) added five points to go along with three assists, two rebounds and two steals.
For Connecticut, freshman Breanna Stewart led all scorers with 21 points after shooting 7-of-14 from the field. Sophomore Brianna Banks shot 8-of-9 off the bench for the Huskies to finish with 20 points to go along with five rebounds and five assists. The Huskies had seven players score in double-figures.
Connecticut used a 26-0 run to start the second half to surge past the Tigers for the 119-50 victory. The Huskies drained 18 three-pointers in the game after shooting 52.9-percent from beyond the arc for the game to pace their offense. Connecticut outscored the Tigers, 61-12, in the second stanza.
In the first half, the Tigers trailed 16-7 at the 13:50 mark. Holy Family used a 10-0 run to take a 17-16 lead after Cruz drained a three-pointer to give the Tigers their first lead of the game. Cruz and Mann highlighted the run with a three-pointer each.
UConn responded on their next possession with a three-pointer by sophomore Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis as the Huskies regained the lead by the score of 19-17 at the 11:06 mark of the half. Mosqueda-Lewis finished the game with 14 points to go along with five rebounds and five assists.
The Tigers regained the lead after another Cruz three-pointer with 10:30 remaining in the first half. Cruz's three-pointer made the score 20-19 in favor of the Tigers.
That would be the last time the Tigers would lead as UConn responded with a 10-0 run over the next two-plus minutes. Mosqueda-Lewis capped the Huskies' run with a three-pointer to make the score 30-20 with 8:08 left on the clock.
Holy Family would cut the lead to five points (30-25) at the 6:49 mark after junior
Carolyne Heston (Feasterville, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) converted a three-point play after scoring a fastbreak layup and the free throw after being fouled on the play.
That would be as close as the Tigers' would get of UConn's lead as the Huskies closed out the first half on a 28-13 run.
Holy Family shot 48.1-percent from the field in the first half, including 7-of-14 from beyond the arc.
Holy Family will open its season officially on Sunday, Nov. 11 as the Tigers travel to Waltham, Mass. to face #2 Bentley University in a rematch of last year's NCAA Division II East Region Final. Game time is slated for 1:30 p.m.
