Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University women's basketball team defeated Wilmington University by the score of 94-72 in the first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest of the season Tuesday night at the Campus Center Gym.
Holy Family, ranked 14th in the recent USA Today/ESPN NCAA Division II National Top-25 Coaches' Poll, improves to 3-1 overall after winning its third straight game and starts conference play with a 1-0 mark. Wilmington falls to 0-4 overall and begins conference action at 0-1.
Holy Family had five players score in double-figures, including senior
Erin Mann (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) who led all scorers with 23 points. Mann, the CACC Player of the Week, shot 7-of-12 from the field and converted 9-of-11 from the free throw line. She also grabbed three boards and blocked two shots.
Senior
Kelly Brady (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) recorded her second double-double of the year after tallying 11 points and a game-best 12 rebounds. Brady shot 2-of-3 from the field and 7-of-8 from the free throw line. She also recorded five steals on the defensive end.
Fellow classmate
Molly Hanlon (Narberth, Pa./Lower Merion) contributed 14 points to go along with three assists and four blocks, while junior
Carolyne Heston (Feasterville, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) added ten points (4-6) off the bench for the Tigers.
Sophomore
Reagan Jewell (Winooski, Vt./Rice Memorial) filled the stat sheet with six points, a career-high eight rebounds and three assists.
For Wilmington, senior Danielle Thomas led the Wildcats with 22 points after shooting 7-of-12 from the field, including 6-of-8 from long range. Freshman Tenicia Spence scored 20 points after draining five three-pointers (5-13). Fellow classmate Tiaja Harrold contributed 11 points off the bench after shooting 5-of-8 from the field.
Trailing by four points late in the first half, Holy Family used a 14-0 run the final 3:06 minutes of the half to take a ten point lead into the locker rooms at halftime. A three-pointer by Hanlon sparked the run at the 3:06 mark to make the score 31-30 and then a layup basket by Heston capped the run to give the Tigers the 41-31 halftime lead.
Holy Family took advantage of free throw opportunities in the first half converting 14-of-19 attempts, while Wilmington did not even attempt a free throw in the half. Holy Family shot 32-of-45 from the line compared to only five attempts by the Wildcats (4-5).
In the second half, Holy Family began pulling away and extending its lead to as many as 28 points midway through the half. A pair of free throws by Brady made the score 75-47 giving the Tigers their biggest lead of the game.
Holy Family also controlled the boards outrebounding Wilmington by a 62-43 margin.
Holy Family is back in action on Monday, Nov. 26 as the Tigers travel to face St. Thomas Aquinas College in a non-conference contest. Game time is slated for 5:30 p.m.
