Hillburn, N.Y. - Dominican College converted four-of-its five penalty kicks during the shootout period to advance past the Holy Family University men's soccer team in the quarterfinals of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament Wednesday afternoon at the Torne Valley Sports Complex.
Holy Family, seeded seventh in this year's tournament, concludes its season at 8-7-3, while second-seeded Dominican is now 9-5-3 overall. The Chargers will now face No. 6 Nyack College on Friday in the CACC semifinals hosted by Post University. Nyack defeated third-seeded Philadelphia, 4-0, in its quarterfinal contest.
Dominican made its last three penalty kicks in the shootout period to clinch the victory by the score of 4-2. The Chargers made their first shot and the Tigers countered with a made kick by senior
Dodji Freitas (Philadelphia, Pa. (Togo)//Samuel Fels) to tie the shootout at 1-1. Both teams then missed their next attempt and then a converted kick to open round three gave the Chargers a 2-1 advantage. Junior
Alex Bilay (Philadelphia, Pa. (Ukraine)/Central) would go on to convert his penalty kick attempt in round three to tie the score at 2-2.
Dominican then took a 3-2 lead in round four and held on to the slight lead after a Holy Family missed attempt. The Chargers then clinched the shootout in round five after Manuel Valencia made his attempt.
Both teams ended regulation tied 1-1 after a goal apiece in the second half. Freitas broke a 0-0 deadlock in the 62
nd minute with his 15
th goal of the season. Sophomore
Justin Massaro (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) was credited the assist on the score.
The Tigers maintained their lead late into the half, however Dominican eventually scored the equalizing goal to tie the game at 1-1. Christopher Walsh tied the game with a score in the 84
th minute with Luis Delpezo assisting on the play to force overtime.
Dominican controlled the game with 31 shots, including ten in overtime. Holy Family managed only 17 shots for the game as the Chargers' defense limited the Tigers to just one shot in the overtime periods.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Nick Aglira (Churchville, Pa./Archbishop Wood) tallied a career-high 14 saves in net for the Tigers, while Dominican's Andres Ruiz recorded nine stops.
