Tigers Punch Ticket for Postseason With 3-1 Victory at Chestnut Hill

BOX SCORE

Lafayette Hill, Pa. - The Holy Family University men's soccer team picked up a key Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory on the road as the Tigers defeated Chestnut Hill College by the score of 3-1 Wednesday night.

With the win, Holy Family improves to 8-7-2 overall and 5-5-1 in conference play.  In the process, the Tigers clinched a postseason berth with the win in their regular season finale.  Chestnut Hill concludes its season with a 5-12-1 overall mark and 3-8-0 record against CACC opponents.

Both teams battled to a scoreless first half and it wasn't until the 59th minute that the first goal of the game would be scored.  The Tigers struck first as senior Dodji Freitas (Philadelphia, Pa. (Togo)//Samuel Fels) connected on his 14th goal of the season.  Freitas headed the ball into the back of the net after a perfectly placed throw-in by junior Ahmed Elgayar (Philadelphia, Pa./Central)

Holy Family would double its lead in the 65th minute after a corner kick attempt by the Tigers.  The ball deflected off a Chestnut Hill defender pass the goal line and as a result gave the Tigers a 2-0 advantage.

Later in the half, Chestnut Hill finally got on the scoreboard with a goal by Dominic Pernice in the 78th minute to cut the Holy Family lead in half at 2-1.

The Tigers responded in the 85th minute tacking on an insurance goal after sophomore Justin Massaro (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) scored his fourth goal of the season.  Massaro received a cross pass from freshman Aiah Mbriwa (Abington, Pa./Philmont Christian Academy) as he headed the ball into the net for the score.

Holy Family went on to the 3-1 victory despite being outshot by Chestnut Hill, 18-12, for the game.  The Griffins also held a slight edge on corner kicks, 7-6, for the game, including 4-2 in the second half.

Senior goalkeeper Kelly Diaz (Palisades Park, N.J./Palisades Park) made five saves in net for the Tigers, while Michael Goldstein stopped three shots for the Griffins.

Holy Family is back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 30 as the Tigers open the CACC Tournament with a quarterfinal match at an opponent still to be determined.  The CACC Tournament pairings will be announced later this weekend.
