Ba’s Fifth Goal of Season Lifts Men’s Soccer In Double Overtime

BOX SCORE

Philadelphia, Pa. -
Senior forward Seydou Ba (Philadelphia, Pa. (Mauritania)/John Bartram) scored the game-winning goal in double-overtime as the Holy Family University men's soccer team defeated Caldwell College, 3-2, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest Saturday afternoon at Tiger Field.

With the win, Holy Family improves to 2-1-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the CACC, while Caldwell is now 2-1-0 overall and 0-1-0 in conference play.

Ba's goal in the 109th minute marked his second game-winning overtime goal in ten days and his fifth goal of the season.  He scored the game-winner in the season opener at Molloy College.

Caldwell jumped out to an early lead when sophomore Mosiah Whyte tallied his fifth goal of the season.  Junior Brendan Hughes assisted on the play as the Cougars led 1-0 in the 17th minute. The score remained that way through the rest of the first half.

After halftime, Caldwell maintained its 1-0 advantage until freshman Keith Crews (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) tied the game with his first collegiate goal in the 52nd minute.

The game didn't stay deadlock for long as minutes later Caldwell responded with a goal from junior Donald Kafer, his fist of the season, to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead.

As the half progressed, Holy Family came back and tied the game again.  This time it was freshman Nicolas Delgado (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic) scoring his first collegiate goal in the 74th minute to make the score 2-2.  Senior Marc Fischer (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennsbury) assisted on the play.

Both teams had opportunities to score the potential game-winner in the final minutes of regulation but were unsuccessful which resulted in overtime soccer.

With less than two minutes remaining in the second overtime period, Ba knocked in his fifth goal of the season as he lobbed his shot to the upper left hand corner of the net over the reach of the goalie.

Both teams finished the game with 21 shots a piece as well as identical tallies in corner shots with eight.

Senior goalkeeper Mark Ferretti (Voorhees, N.J./Paul VI) made nine saves in net for the Tigers, while his counterpart, junior Brian Agostini, made five saves.

Holy Family returns to action on Tuesday, September 13 as the Tigers host Queens College in a non-conference match.  Game time is slated for 4:30 p.m.
