Newtown, Pa. - The Holy Family University softball team split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader with Bloomfield College after winning game one, 9-8, as freshman
Samantha Borrelli (West Berlin, N.J./Overbrook) scored the winning run in the final inning at Council Rock North High School Saturday afternoon. The Tigers dropped game two by the score of 6-5.
With the split, Holy Family is now 5-17 overall and 2-4 in the CACC, while Bloomfield is now 18-13 overall and 9-7 in the CACC.
In game one, Holy Family rallied from six runs down to defeat Bloomfield. With the game tied 8-8 in the bottom of the seventh, Borrelli, who doubled earlier in the inning, scored the game-winning run after a wild pitch by sophomore pitcher Lindsey Ciresa.
The Deacons scored seven runs in the top half of the fifth inning to take a 7-1 lead. Sophomore Krystina Poloni highlighted the inning with a grand slam homerun to cap the rally. Fellow classmate Ashleigh Williams had a two-run single earlier in the inning.
Holy Family made the score 7-3 in its half of the fifth inning after junior
Katherine Cohen (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern) drove in a pair of runs with base hit. In the following inning Bloomfield tacked on an insurance run to take an 8-3 advantage.
In the bottom half of the sixth, Holy Family rallied for five runs to tie the game at 8-8. Cohen again highlighted the inning with a two-run single to make the score 8-7. Two batters later junior
Bianca Robinson (Erial, N.J./Timber Creek) drove in the game-tying run as fellow classmate
Shauna Vennell (Bellmawr, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) crossed home plate after singling earlier in the inning.
Freshman
Rachael Alligood (Levittown, Pa./Harry S. Truman) picked up her second win of the season after pitching a complete game. Alligood struck out four batters in the victory. Cohen finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBI, while freshman
Hayley Brennan (Frankford, Del./Indian River) finished with three hits in four at-bats and scored three runs.
For Bloomfield, sophomore Ashton Corley was 3-for-4 at the plate, while Poloni finished 2-for-4 to go along with her grand slam.
In game two, Bloomfield had another big inning to take a 6-2 lead after the Deacon's half of the fifth inning. Bloomfield had five hits in the inning, including back-to-back run scoring doubles from senior Amanda Bartels and freshman Jocelyn Cabrera to jump start the rally.
Holy Family, just like in game one, rallied late as the Tigers put three runs on the board in the bottom half of the sixth inning to make the score 6-5. Robinson and sophomore
Danielle McDevitt (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) each recorded RBI singles in the inning.
Holy Family threatened in the bottom half of the seventh as the Tigers had runners at the corners with two outs. However, Bloomfield's Williams was able to get out of the jam to salvage the 6-5 victory.
Vennell finished game two 3-for-4 at the plate to go along with a run and an RBI, while McDevitt was 2-for-3 with a run and RBI for the Tigers.
For Bloomfield, senior Kira Wagar recorded a multi-hit game after finishing 2-for-4 at the plate.
Holy Family is back in action on Monday, April 11 as the Tigers host cross-town rival Philadelphia University in a CACC doubleheader. Game one is scheduled for 3 p.m.
