Women’s Basketball Clinches CACC South Division Regular Season Title With Victory over Univ. of the Sciences

Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University women's basketball team completed the season sweep of the University of the Sciences in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest with a 60-51 victory at the Morgan Arena Wednesday night.

Holy Family, ranked 17th in the recent USA Today/ESPN Division II National Top-25 Coaches' Poll and first in the NCAA Division II East Region, improves to 20-3 overall and 17-1 in the CACC. The University of the Sciences is now 20-5 overall and 15-3 in the CACC.

The victory clinched Holy Family's fourth straight CACC South Division Regular Season title and 11th overall. The conference switched to division play beginning with the 2007-2008 season. The Tigers will also be the number one seed in south division in the upcoming conference tournament. The University of the Sciences secured the second seed.

Graduate student Samantha Thompson (Southampton, Pa./St. Basils) (Southampton, Pa./St. Basil's) scored a team-high 19 points to lead the Holy Family offense. Thompson shot 6-of-9 from the field, including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. Senior Catherine Carr (Bernardsville, N.J./Bernards) (Bernardsville, N.J./Bernards) finished with 11 points to go along with five rebounds and two blocked shots. With her performance, Carr is only 50 points away from tying Debbie Schopfer's all-time scoring record of 1,928 points. She currently sits at 1,878 career points.

Junior Lauren Peters (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) (Doylstown, Pa./Central Bucks West) and sophomore Erin Mann (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) each scored nine points apiece. Peters was a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line and also grabbed six boards. Mann collected a game-high 12 rebounds while blocking three shots.

For the University of the Sciences, senior Colleen Christian scored a game-high 22 points to pace the way for the Devils. Christian shot 9-of-17 from the field, including 4-of-9 from deep range. Fellow classmate Caitlin Shaw was one rebound shy of a double-double as she scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

Holy Family opened the game with a 14-5 run and led by as much as nine points in the half after freshman Katie Duma (Poestenkill, N.Y./Averill Park) (Poestenkill, N.Y./Averill Park) scored on a layup at the 13:17 mark.

Later in the half, Shaw tied the game on a pair of free throws to make the score 17-17 with just over six minutes left on the clock in the first half.

Cold shooting troubled both teams in the first half as the Tigers and Devils combined for only 15 field goals. Holy Family managed to take a 24-23 advantage heading into the locker rooms at halftime despite only shooting 28-percent from the field.

In the second half, Holy Family began heating up as the Tigers shot 43.5-percent from the field, including 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. Senior Meghan Gibson (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) gave Holy Family its first double-digit lead of the game late in the second half as she drained a three-pointer to give the Tigers a 49-38 lead with 4:59 to play. Gibson's three-pointer capped an 11-3 run for Holy Family.

Minutes later Carr drained a three of her own to increase the Holy Family lead to 14 points (54-40) with 3:20 left in regulation. The University of the Sciences managed to cut the Tigers' lead to as little as seven points on three different occasions in the final minutes but that would be as close as the Devils would get.

The Holy Family defense limited the Devils' offense to only 28.8-percent shooting from the field and 26.1-percent from long distance.

Holy Family closes out the regular season on the road on Friday, Feb. 25 at Felician College. Game time is slated for 6 p.m.
