Second Half Rally Lifts Women’s Basketball Past Philadelphia University

Philadelphia, Pa. – The Holy Family University women's basketball team used a 22-6 run midway through the second half as the Tigers defeated cross-town rival Philadelphia University, 87-70, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest at the Gallagher Athletic Center Tuesday night.

Holy Family, ranked 21st in the recent USA Today/ESPN Division II National Top-25 Coaches' Poll, improves to 13-3 overall and 10-1 in the CACC. Philadelphia is now 10-8 overall and 6-5 in the CACC.

Senior Catherine Carr (Bernardsville, N.J./Bernards) (Bernardsville, N.J./Bernards) scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Holy Family offense. Carr also grabbed five rebounds and dished out seven assists. Junior Lauren Peters (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) tallied 16 points after shooting 6-of-8 from the field, while dishing out five assists.

Graduate student Samantha Thompson (Southampton, Pa./St. Basils) (Southampton, Pa./St. Basil's) contributed 11 points, which all came in the second half. Thompson shot 4-of-5 from the field in the second half. Senior Lindsey Tennett (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) recorded 14 points and seven rebounds off the bench for the Tigers. Tennett also had a big second half as she scored 12 of her 14 points in the second stanza.

For Philadelphia, senior Kate Brennan finished with a team-high 20 points to go along with seven rebounds. Junior Christine Wooding added 14 points and six boards, while sophomore Kristen Blye chipped in 13 points and three rebounds.

Philadelphia jumped out the gate firing as the Rams led by as much as 14 points after Brennan drained a jumper to make the score 29-15 at the 7:46 mark in the first half. However, Holy Family closed the half with a 18-9 run to cut the Philadelphia lead to five (38-33) as the teams entered the locker rooms at half time.

In the second half, Holy Family rallied and used a 22-6 run to take control of the game as the Tigers led by 17 points after Thompson knocked down a three-pointer with 5:22 remaining in regulation. Thompson and Tennett shot a combined 7-of-8 from the field and 7-of-7 from the free throw line in the second half scoring 23 points.

Holy Family shot 64.-3-percent from the field and knocked down five three-pointers (5-9) in the second half on its way to the 87-70 victory. The Tigers outscored the Rams 54-32 in the second half and limited their defense to only 38.7-percent shooting in the half.

Holy Family is back in action on Thursday, Feb. 3 when the Tigers host Chestnut Hill College in a CACC contest. Game time is slated for 6 p.m.
