Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University men's soccer team scored three second-half goals on its way to a 5-2 victory against Concordia College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest Thursday afternoon at Tiger Field.
With the win, Holy Family wraps up the regular season with a 10-5-1 overall record and 7-3-1 in conference play, while Concordia concludes the season at 3-14-0 overall and 3-8-0 in the CACC. The Tigers currently sit in third place in the CACC standings but could finish as low as fifth pending the results of the remaining conference games scheduled for Friday.
Holy Family tallied three goals in a six-plus minute span in the second half to come away with the victory against Concordia. Senior
Seydou Ba (Philadelphia, Pa. (Mauritania)/John Bartram) scored his team-leading 11
th goal of the season in the 65
th minute to break a 2-2 tie. Freshman
Keith Crews (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) assisted on the eventual game-winner by Ba.
A minute later, Holy Family struck again, this time it was senior
Conor Rodgers (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) scoring his second goal of the season to double the Tigers lead at 4-2.
The Tigers final goal came in the 71
st minute when sophomore
Ira Woodruff (Philadelphia, Pa./North Catholic) took a pass from Ba in the middle of the box and drove the ball into the back of the net for his first score of the season. It marked Ba's second assist of the game as he was credited with an assist on Rodgers' goal.
Holy Family took an early 1-0 lead when junior
Jeffrey Wimsey (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) scored his eighth goal of the season. Senior
Marc Fischer (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennsbury) assisted on the play in the eighth minute of action.
Later in the half, Concordia tied the game at 1-1 when senior David Mero scored an unassisted goal in the 20
th minute. The game didn't stay tied for long. Holy Family responded with a goal of its own when Crews scored his second goal in two games as he drove in a rebounded ball off a save by the Concordia goalkeeper. Crews' goal came in the 24
th minute and marked his fifth of the season.
The game remained 2-1 in favor of the home team heading into halftime, however Concordia tied the game for the second time on the afternoon with a goal from senior Richard Heredia. Heredia's goal tied the game at 2-2 in the 48
th minute.
Both teams finished with 14 shots apiece as Holy Family held a slight advantage in corner kicks, 4-2.
The Tigers will now await word on their final postseason positioning in the upcoming CACC Championships when conference play concludes on Friday. The championship is set to begin on Monday, Oct. 31 with quarterfinal action.
