Women’s Basketball Defeats University of the Sciences, 73-65

Philadelphia, Pa. – Senior Catherine Carr (Bernardsville, N.J./Bernards) (Bernardsville, N.J./Bernards) scored a game-high 21 points to lift the Holy Family University women's basketball team to a 73-65 victory over the University of the Sciences in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest at the Campus Center Tuesday night.

Holy Family, ranked 15th in the recent USA Today/ESPN Division II Top-25 Coaches' Poll, improves to 7-2 overall and 4-0 in the CACC. In the process, Holy Family increases its NCAA Division II record of regular season conference victories to 107 and improved its home regular season winning streak to 69. The University of the Sciences is now 6-3 overall and 2-1 in the CACC.

Carr led the Holy Family offense with 21 points as she converted 9-of-10 from the free throw line. She also finished with seven rebounds and five assists. Junior Lauren Peters (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) added 14 points after shooting 4-of-6 from the field and a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Graduate student Samantha Thompson (Southampton, Pa./St. Basils) (Southampton, Pa./St. Basil's) and senior Meghan Gibson (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) each scored nine points. Gibson also grabbed nine rebounds.

For the University of the Sciences, senior Caitlin Shaw scored 21 points after shooting 6-of-8 from the field and 9-of-10 from the free throw line. Fellow classmate Colleen Christian tallied 20 points, while Alyssa Hamm contributed 12 points.

Holy Family trailed by two points by the score of 24-22 with less than six minutes remaining in the first half before going on a 13-3 run to close out the half. Freshman Mary Ellen McCollum (Abington, Pa./St. Basil Academy) (Abington, Pa./St. Basil's) knocked down two three-point baskets to start the run. The Tigers entered halftime with a 35-27 advantage.

In the second half, Holy Family increased its lead to as much as 14 points after Carr drained a two-point basket at the 13:50 mark to make the score 45-31.

The University of the Sciences came within six points on a number of occasions throughout the half, however each time the Holy Family offense responded to halt any possible rally.

Holy Family is back in action on Thursday Jan. 6 as the Tigers visit Chestnut Hill College for a CACC contest. Game time is slated for 6 p.m.
