Hot Shooting Leads Women’s Basketball Past Concordia, 97-51

Philadelphia, Pa. – The Holy Family University women's basketball team defeated Concordia College, 97-51, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest at the Campus Center Saturday afternoon.

Holy Family, ranked 22nd in the recent USA Today/ESPN Division II National Top-25 Coaches' Poll, improves to 11-3 overall and 8-1 in the CACC. Concordia drops to 2-14 overall and 1-8 in the CACC after the loss.

Holy Family had a quartet of players score in double-figures as senior Catherine Carr (Bernardsville, N.J./Bernards) (Bernardsville, N.J./Bernards) led the way with a game-high 20 points. With her performance, Carr became the fifth player in program history to score over 1,700 career points. She currently has 1,719 career points and is 15 points away from moving into fourth place on the all-time scoring list.

Sophomore Erin Mann (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) scored 18 points after shooting 8-of-10 from the field, while graduate student Samantha Thompson (Southampton, Pa./St. Basils) (Southampton, Pa./St. Basil's) contributed 12 points. Sophomore Kelly Brady (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) recorded her first career double-double after setting new career highs in points (11) and rebounds (11). Senior Meghan Gibson (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) tallied eight points and dished out a game-high and new career-best nine assists.

For Concordia, senior Shelley Monahan scored a team-high 12 points off the bench, while junior Chanessa Blakemore recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Katie Nikosey finished with eight points for the Clippers.

With the game tied at 9-9, Holy Family used a 27-6 run to pull away from Concordia as the Tigers led 36-15 with 7:22 remaining in the first half. Holy Family shot an impressive 58.8-percent from the field in the half to jump out to a 27 point first half lead as the Tigers led 55-28 entering the locker rooms at halftime.

In the second half, Holy Family continued hits hot shooting, while its defense limited the Concordia offense to only 27.3-percent shooting from the field in the second half. The Tigers outscored the Clippers 42-23 in the half as they went on to the 97-51 victory.

Holy Family is back in action a week from today (Jan. 29) as the Tigers face Caldwell College on the road in a CACC contest. Game time is slated for 2 p.m.
