Second Half Surge Leads Women’s Basketball to 76-61 Victory Over Rival Philadelphia University

Philadelphia, Pa. – The Holy Family University women's basketball team defeated cross-town rival Philadelphia University, 76-61, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest at the Campus Center Tuesday night.

Holy Family, ranked 14th in the recent USA Today/ESPN Division II National Top-25 Coaches' Poll, improves to 10-2 overall and 7-0 in the CACC after winning its sixth straight game. In the process, Holy Family increased its NCAA Division II record of consecutive regular season conference victories to 110 and improved its home regular season winning streak to 71.

Sophomore Erin Mann (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) led the Holy Family offense with a game-high 22 points after shooting 9-of-12 from the field. Mann also tallied seven rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Senior Catherine Carr (Bernardsville, N.J./Bernards) (Bernardsville, N.J./Bernards) scored 16 points and in the process moved into fifth place on the all-time scoring list in program history. She now has 1,692 points surpassing Erin Eliasen who scored 1,685 career points from 1995-1998. Carr also grabbed eight boards and dished out six assists.

Senior Lindsey Tennett (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) added 14 points off the bench for the Tigers after shooting a perfect 5-of-5 from the field and 4-of-5 from the free throw line. Junior Lauren Peters (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) contributed seven points, while dishing out five assists and tallying five steals.

For Philadelphia, junior Stephanie Agger scored a team-high 19 points after shooting 7-of-14 from the field. Senior Kate Brennan contributed 13 points, while sophomore Kristen Blye added 10 points to go along with nine rebounds.

Both teams battled back-and-forth throughout the first half, which saw Philadelphia leading a majority of the half. However, Holy Family tied the game at 23-23 after Carr knocked down a three-point basket with 6:04 remaining in the first half.

The Tigers took the lead for good a few minutes later when freshman Katie Duma (Poestenkill, N.Y./Averill Park) (Poestenkill, N.Y./Averill Park) drained a three of her own to give Holy Family a 26-25 lead at the 4:50 mark. The Tigers closed out the first half with a four-point advantage by the score of 35-31.

Holy Family began the second half with an 8-0 run capped by a pair of free throws by Mann to give the Tigers their first double-digit lead of the game with the score in their favor, 43-31.

The Tigers increased their lead to as much as 17 late in the second half after Peters scored a layup to make the score 68-51 with 4:47 remaining in regulation. Holy Family finished the game shooting 45.0-percent from the field on its way to the 76-61 victory.

Holy Family is back in action on Thursday, Jan. 13 as the Tigers host Goldey-Beacom College. Game time is slated for 6 p.m.
