Women’s Basketball Defeats Goldey-Beacom, 68-48; Remains Undefeated in Conference Play

Wilmington, Del. – Senior Meghan Gibson (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Holy Family University women's basketball team to a 68-48 victory over Goldey-Beacom College in a Central Collegiate Athletic Conference (CACC) contest Thursday night.

Holy Family, ranked 15th in the recent USA Today/ESPN Division II Top-25 Coaches' Poll, improves to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in conference play. In the process, Holy Family increased its NCAA Division II record of consecutive regular season conference victories to 106. Goldey-Beacom is now 4-5 overall and 3-1 in the CACC.

Gibson shot an impressive 70-percent (7-10) from the field, including 5-of-6 from three to lead Holy Family. She also tallied eight rebounds and three assists. Graduate student Samantha Thompson (Southampton, Pa./St. Basils) (Southampton, Pa./St. Basil's) and sophomore Erin Mann (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) each contributed 11 points apiece. Mann also collected a game-high 12 rebounds to record a double-double. Senior Catherine Carr (Bernardsville, N.J./Bernards) (Bernardsville, N.J./Bernards) added nine points.

For Goldey-Beacom, junior Jacinda Jones finished with a team-high 19 points, while collecting four rebounds and four steals. Sophomore Irene Hudson added nine points and eight rebounds off the bench for the Lightning.

With the game tied 5-5 with 14:56 remaining in the first half, Holy Family went on a 16-0 run capped by a three-pointer by Thompson at the 9:18 mark. The Tigers had a 21-5 advantage and increased their lead to as much as 20 points with less than two minutes to play in the half after Gibson knocked down a three-pointer to make the score 32-12.

Holy Family entered the locker room at halftime leading 32-17.

In the second half, Holy Family continued to lead by double figures, however Goldey-Beacom came within 10 points after Melanie Johnson drained a three-point basketball to make the score 42-32 with just over 10 minutes to play in the second half.

Holy Family responded and halted the Goldey-Beacom rally as Gibson scored two three-point baskets in less than a minute span to give the Tigers a 16 points lead (48-32).

The Tigers swelled their lead to as much as 26 points later in the half on their way to the 68-48 victory.

Holy Family returns to action after a 13-day layoff as the Tigers will travel to the west coast and compete in the Surf & Slam Tournament in San Diego, Calif. Holy Family will face Mars Hill (N.C.) at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 29 and then will take on Ashland (Ohio) at 12 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 30.
