Lightning Strike Tigers to Open Conference Play



Wilmington, Del. - The Holy Family University softball team dropped its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opener at Goldey-Beacom College by the scores of 9-2 and 10-9 on Tuesday afternoon at the Jackson Athletics Complex.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Trailing 1-0 entering the third inning, the Tigers tied the game thanks to a run scoring double by senior Sam Klem (San Diego, Calif./Clairemont).  The RBI double not only tied the game but also marked her 100th career hit. 
 
* The Lightning regained the lead in the bottom of the inning when Kasey Goshorn hit a sacrifice fly to make the score 2-1.  After keeping the Tigers off the board in the top of the fourth, the Lightning rallied for five runs in the bottom half of the inning.  Zoe Lockwood highlighted the inning with a two-run single.
 
* Holy Family scored a run in the fifth inning when sophomore Heather Bogardus (Ridley, Pa./Ridley) got things going with a one-out triple.  She would then score on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Taylor Nichols (Salisbury, Md./Parkside)
 
* Goldey-Beacom added another run in the bottom of the fifth and the sixth to make the score 9-2 as Taylor Beres (2-3) earned the win for the Lightning.  Beres went five innings allowing two earned runs on five hits. 
 
* Bogardus and Klem each went 2-for-4 in the game. 
 
* Lockwood went 2-for-3 for Goldey-Beacom as she totaled two runs and three RBI.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* Game two featured 12 combined runs within the first two innings of play.  The Tigers plated four runs in the top half of the first as freshmen Madelyn Yeager (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) and Abigail Smith (Elkton, Md./Red Lion Christian Academy) recorded back-to-back triples.  Yeager drove in a pair, while Smith scored Yeager on her triple and followed to home plate after an error by the Lightning.
 
* The Tigers' lead would be short-lived as the Lightning responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning after taking advantage of two Holy Family errors.  Goshorn drove in two runs with a double in the inning.
 
* The Lightning's lead wouldn't last long either as the Tigers added three runs in the second inning.  With two outs in the inning, Nichols single to left field to score sophomore Michelle Slaughter (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin Towne Charter) who led the inning off with a bunt hit.  Two batters later, freshman Elaina Hansen (Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional) drove in a pair with a single to center field.
 
* The score remained 7-5 in favor of the Tigers until the bottom of the seventh inning.  A double by Jess Lusk cut the lead to one run before Taylor Beres came through with the game-tying hit to force extra innings.
 
* Bogardus, placed on second to start the ninth, scored on a Klem fly ball to right field that was dropped.  Klem would go on to advance to second on the error.  Freshman Jasmine Martinez (Riverside, Calif./Riverside Polytechnic) pinch-ran for Klem and scored on the next play when Hansen singled up the middle. 
 
* In the bottom of the inning the Lightning rallied and took advantage of three Holy Family errors.  Goldey-Beacom scored three runs in the inning with Emily Lozowski coming through with the walk-off hit scoring Dianna Gatto.    
 
* Hansen finished the game 3-for-5 with three RBI to lead the Tigers.
 
* Goshorn and Lusk each drove in a pair of runs for the Lightning.
 
News and Notes
 
* Klem recorded her 100th career hit in the third inning of game one with a run scoring double.  She finished the doubleheader 3-for-8  and now has 102 career hits.
 
* Senior Olivia Nolan (Shoreline, Wash./Shorecrest) went 2-for-2 in game two and is now one hit away from joining Klem in the 100-career hit club.  She'll enter her next game with 99 career hits.
 
* For Goldey-Beacom, Goshorn went 3-for-7 in the doubleheader and drove in a combined four runs.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 37th and 38th match ups between Holy Family and Goldey-Beacom since the start of the 2002 season.  The Tigers are now 28-10 versus the Lightning in the all-time series.  The game one victory by the Lightning snapped the Tigers' 13-game winning streak in the series.
 
Next Up
Holy Family returns to action on Thursday, March 21 as the Tigers travel to face Queens College in a non-conference doubleheader.  Game one is set for 2:30 p.m.
