Tigers Drop Two to Molloy to Open Season



Clermont, Fla. - The Holy Family University softball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader to Molloy College to open the 2019 season at the PFX Springs Games in Clermont, Fla.  The Lions took game one, 10-0, and then rallied to win game two, 5-4.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Molloy scored a pair of runs in each the second, third and fourth innings to take a commanding 6-0 lead in the game.  Lauren Ramos drove in a pair in the second with a double, while Kaitlyn Snyder came through with a run scoring double in the fourth.
 
* The Lions capped the scoring with a four-run seventh inning as Angelique Serrano and Ramos each recorded run scoring singles. 
 
* Amanda King earned her first win of the season as she scattered eight hits through five innings of work.  King also struck out four batters in the winning effort.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* Holy Family took advantage of three Molloy errors in the first inning that led to three runs.  Sophomore Heather Bogardus (Ridley, Pa./Ridley) tripled after a drive to right field and would score when sophomore Taylor Nichols (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) dropped down a sacrifice bunt.  Nichols, though made it to first after a throwing error and then later scored on another Lions' error.  Junior Tyler Beccari (Havertown, Pa./Haverford (Temple)) capped the scoring with a double to right-center field scoring freshman Ashley Reminington who reached on an error.
 
* Molloy added a couple of runs in the second inning to make the score 3-2.  Holy Family came away with a run in the fourth to increase its lead.  Junior Julia Vizza (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert) dropped down a bunt for a hit that scored Beccari who led the inning off with a single. 
 
* The Lions cut the Tigers' lead down to a single run again in the fifth thanks to a Courtney Greene RBI single.  One inning later a two-run double by Ramos came the Lions their first lead of the day as Molloy took a 5-4 lead into the final frame.
 
* Molloy's Jenna Turato (2-3) retired the Tigers in order in the top-half of the seventh to secure her second win of the season.  Entering in relief in the first inning, Turato allowed just one unearned run in 6.1 innings of work while striking out seven.
 
News and Notes
 
* Senior Sam Klem (San Diego, Calif./Clairemont) accounted for three of the Tigers' eight hits in the first game as she went 3-for-3 at the plate.  One of her three hits was a double.
 
* Beccari also had a 3-for-3 game as she tallied three hits in game two to go along with a double, one run and one RBI. 
 
* Bogardus also had a multiple hit day as she went 2-for-4 with a run and triple in game two.
 
* Freshmen Megan Cappadora (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) and Elaina Hansen (Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional) each recorded their first collegiate hits.
 
* Remington (0-1) made her first collegiate start in the pitching circle for the Tigers in game two.  She allowed just one earned one in six innings, while striking out five batters. 
 
* For Molloy, Ramos went 3-for-6 on the day with six RBI.  She had three RBI in each game.
 
Chasing 100
Klem along with senior Olivia Nolan (Shoreline, Wash./Shorecrest) are both in striking distance of 100 career hits.  After collecting a triple in game one, Nolan will enter Monday's play with 95 career hits, while Klem will enter with 92 career hits.  
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 19th and 20th meetings between Holy Family and Molloy since the start of the 2002 season.  The all-time series is all evened up at 10-10 with the Lions winning the last four match ups.
 
Next Up
Holy Family returns to action tomorrow as the Tigers face Indiana University (Pa.) at 3:45 p.m. and St. Thomas Aquinas College at 6 p.m. on day two of the team's Florida trip. Both games will be played at Legends Way.
