Clermont, Fla. - The Holy Family University softball team dropped a pair of non-conference contests to Indiana University (Pa.) and St. Thomas Aquinas College on day two of the team's Florida trip down in Clermont for the PFX Spring Games.

Game 2: St. Thomas Aquinas 7, Holy Family 4
Records: Holy Family (0-4) | IUP (3-4) | St. Thomas Aquinas (2-3)
Location: Clermont, Fla. (Legends Way Field #3)

How It Happened (vs. IUP)

* IUP jumped out to an early lead after scoring one run in the first and four in the second.  Back-to-back run scoring doubles by Kaitlyn Beers and Jenna Rhue highlighted the four-run second inning for the Crimson Hawks.

* It was plenty of run support for Brooklyn Kotula who held the Tigers to four hits in a complete five-inning performance.  Kotula struck out one batter in the win.

* IUP scored four more runs in the fourth and two runs in the fifth inning.

* Rhue led the Crimson Hawks with a 2-for-3 day at the plate as she drove in a game-high four runs.

How It Happened (vs. St. Thomas Aquinas)

* The Holy Family offense came to life against the Spartans.  The Tigers plated two runs in the top half of the first inning as freshmen Elaina Hansen (Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional) and Megan Cappadora (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) each drove in a run.

* The Tigers lead would be short-lived as the Spartans responded in the bottom of the inning.  With two runners aboard, Amanda Leone drove a ball over the leftfield fence for a three-run homer to give the Spartans a 3-2 lead.

* Holy Family quickly responded in the second inning with two runs to regain the lead.  Freshman Ashley Remington (Collegeville, Pa./Pope John Paul II) led the inning off with a double and would advance to third after junior Tyler Beccari (Havertown, Pa./Haverford (Temple)) dropped down a bunt for a base hit.  Sophomores Heather Bogardus (Ridley, Pa./Ridley) and Taylor Nichols (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) connected on back-to-back singles to drive in a run apiece.

* In the bottom of the inning the Spartans took advantage of a two-out error by the Tigers that led to three runs.  After the error extended the inning, the Spartans scored on a sacrifice fly and then a two-run infield hit by Elise Oliande that made the score 6-4.

* After both teams combined for 10 runs in the first two innings, neither team was able to score a run over the next three frames.  The Spartans added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to cap the scoring in the 7-4 decision.

News and Notes

* Senior Sam Klem (San Diego, Calif./Clairemont) finished the day going a combined 2-for-5 at the plate as she inches closer to 100 career hits.  She'll enter Tuesday's games with 94 career hits.

* Beccari collected three hits on the day, including a 2-for-4 performance against STAC.  She doubled and went 1-for-2 against IUP.

* Bogardus had a three-hit (3-4) performance against the Spartans in the Tigers' second game on the day.  She finished with three singles to go along with a run and a RBI.  Bogardus is 5-for-8 at the plate to start the season.

* Remington (0-2) made the start against the Spartans and struck out a season-high six batters in a complete six-inning outing.  She also collected her first collegiate hit going 2-for-4 at the plate with a double.

* Freshman Abigail Smith (Elkton, Md./Red Lion Christian Academy) also recorded her first collegiate hit with a single in the game versus IUP.

All-Time Series
Holy Family and IUP were meeting for just the second time as the all-time series is evened up at 1-1.  The Tigers defeated the Crimson Hawks back in 2016. Holy Family and STAC were meeting for the seventh time with the last match up coming in 2009.  The Tigers are now 5-2 versus the Spartans.

Next Up
Holy Family continues its Florida trip on Tuesday as the Tigers face nationally ranked No. 19 University of Indianapolis (1:45 p.m.) and Le Moyne College (4 p.m.).  Both games will be played at Legends Way Field #4.
