Bowie State’s Late Score Defeats Tigers, 70-69

Philadelphia, Pa. - Senior Ray Gatling scored the game-winning basket with 4.7 seconds to give Bowie State University a 70-69 victory over the Holy Family University men's basketball team in a non-conference contest on Thursday night at the Campus Center Gymnasium.
 
Holy Family is now 3-3 overall, while Bowie State improves to 2-3 overall with the victory.
 
Senior Alberto Munoz (Morrisville, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) finished with a game-high 23 points with all but one point coming in the second half.  Munoz finished the first half shooting 0-of-9 from the field, but bounced back in the second half shooting 7-of-9 from the floor, including 4-of-6 from deep range to spark the Tigers offense.  He also grabbed seven rebounds and recorded four steals. 
 
Sophomore Derrick Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti) recorded his second double-double of the season with 12 points (4-8 FG) and ten rebounds.  Stewart also blocked a pair of shots on the defensive end.  Senior Ervin Ezell (Deptford, N.J./Deptford High) knocked fown 4-of-9 from the field to finish with 11 points.  Ezell filled the stat sheet with six assists, three rebounds and tied his season-high with six steals.  It marked the second consecutive game that he finished with six steals on defense.
 
Sophomore Isaiah Gans (Philadelphia, Pa./Redemption Christian Academy) also scored in double-figures with 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting.  Gans blocked a game-high four shots on defense.  Sophomore Turhan Griffin (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin Learning Center) added four points and tied with the team lead with Ezell in assists with six.
 
For Bowie State, Gatling led the way with 16 points all coming in the second half.  He shot 4-of-7 from the field, including 6-of-7 from the free throw line in the second stanza.  Senior David Golladay also scored all of his points in the second half after 4-of-6 shooting from the floor.  Golladay contributed 13 points for the Bulldogs.  Fellow classmate Carlos Smith chipped in ten points and a game-high 14 rebounds to record the double-double.
 
Holy Family led 69-68 after a pair of free throws by Golladay pulled Bowie State to within one point of the Tigers' lead with :22 seconds left in regulation.  On the ensuing possession, the Bulldogs forced a key turnover in the Holy Family end of the court giving the visiting team a chance to take the lead with :14 seconds left on the clock.
 
Bowie State quickly ran down the court and called a timeout with :11 seconds showing.   Out of the timeout Gatling drove through the lane scoring a layup between Holy Family defenders to give the Bulldogs a 70-69 lead with 4.7 seconds left.
 
On the inbounds play Holy Family got up the court quickly as Munoz was able to get a last second three-point attempt off before time expired.  However, the shot bounced off the rim as the Tigers last second attempt came up short. 
 
In a game that saw only three different lead changes, the Tigers led majority of the way and by as many as eight points on two separate occasions in the second half.  The later coming with 3:15 remaining in regulation after Munoz drained a three-pointer to make the score 62-54.  The three by Munoz capped an 8-0 run after the game was tied for the first and only time at 54-54.
 
Both teams struggled from the field in the first half with Bowie State shooting 30.8-percent and Holy Family at 28.9-percent.  However, in the second half the Tigers came out firing shooting 55.6-percent from the floor.  The difference in the game was at the free throw line as Bowie State finished 19-of-22 where as Holy Family only converted 12-of-24 from the line.
 
Holy Family is back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 26 as the Tigers travel to face Mercy College in a non-conference contest.  Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
