Men’s Basketball Cannot Hold Off Second Place Goldey-Beacom

PHILADELPHIA – The HFU Men's Basketball Team led for the first three quarters of the game, building a lead as large as 13, but the Tigers could not hold off second place Goldey-Beacom in a 73-80 loss to the Lightning on Thursday night inside of the Campus Center. 
 
Individual Highlights
  • Najee Coursey (Egg Harbor City, N.J./Cedar Creek (Sacred Heart University)) led all players with a career-best 15 rebounds, falling one point shy of his second career double-double
  • Elijah Hernandez (Bronx, N.Y./Our Savior Lutheran (Westchester CC)) fell one point shy of a game-high with 21, while tying for the team lead with three assists
  • Di'Andre Howell-South (Paterson, N.J./Immaculate Conception (Wagner College)) was also in double-figures with 12 points, to go along with three assists
  • Omarion Jett (Montclair, N.J./Saint Benedict's Prep (American International College)) and Matt Gardler (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) had three assists too, with Jett tying a game-high with four assists

  • Holy Family shot 55.6 percent in the first half, compared to 27.8 percent in the second
 
How it Happened
  • The Tigers led throughout the entirety of the first half after scoring the first six points, with its lead reaching as large as 40-27 on a Howell-South 3-pointer 1:21 ahead of the break
  • Goldey-Beacom recorded the final five points of the half to cut the deficit to eight, but six straight points later put HFU up 53-42 on a Semaj Bethea (Camden, N.J./Camden) free throw with 12:41 remaining
  • Holy Family went scoreless for the next 4:18 though, as the Lightning used 14 in a row to take their first lead
  • It was a lead they would not relinquish, despite the Tigers scoring to make it a one possession deficit on four occasions
  • Trailing 61-71 with 1:51 left, Hernandez tallied HFU's first eight points in a 12-5 surge that got the Tigers as close as 73-76 with 26 seconds to play
  • Goldey-Beacom would ice the game by making four foul shots down the stretch though, as Holy Family could not score again
