Alberto Munoz (Morrisville, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) and sophomore
Eric Fleming (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) combined for ten three-pointers as the Holy Family University men's basketball team defeat Concordia College by the score of 78-54 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest Saturday afternoon at the Campus Center Gym.
Holy Family improves to 5-4 overall and 2-1 in conference play after defeating Concordia for the first time in program-history. The Clippers won the first three meetings since joining the CACC four years ago. Concordia is now 4-7 overall and 2-4 in conference play.
Munoz and Fleming shot a combined 10-of-20 from beyond the arc as both players finished with a game-high 19 points. Munoz connected on 5-of-8 from long range to go along with five rebounds and five assists. Fleming finished 5-of-12 from beyond the arc.
Junior
Ervin Ezell (Deptford, N.J./Deptford High) contributed nine points and a game-high nine assists. He also added to his NCAA Division II lead steals lead with one theft on the game to increase his total to 37 steals on the season.
Sophomore
Richard Council (New York, N.Y./Rice) finished with 11 points and eight rebounds, while senior
Angel Ayala (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) contributed nine points and a team-high ten rebounds.
For Concordia, junior Norman Pope led the team with 14 points to go along with five rebounds. Senior Argelix Gil finished with 13 points and eight rebounds, while sophomore Tshyrad Oates recorded a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
Holy Family never trailed in the game as the Tigers opened the half on a 7-0 run with Munoz beginning the scoring with a three right off the tip-off. Concordia came within two points of the Tigers' lead on four different occasions in the first half, but each time the Tigers responded with a free throw or basket of their own to keep the Clippers at bay.
Holy Family led by as many as eight points in the first half after Munoz drained his third three-pointer of the half to make the score 29-21 with 3:02 left on the clock. The Tigers went on to take a 30-23 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.
In the second half, Holy Family used the momentum of its three-point shooting to swell its lead to double-digits. Holy Family led 38-25 after back-to-back three-pointers by Munoz and Fleming.
Concordia cut the deficit to as low as nine points (41-32) at the 16:25 mark after a layup by Norman Pope, however the Tigers responded with a quick score by Council to give the home squad a double-digit lead again. From that point, the Tigers led by double-digits the rest of the way, including a game-high 24 points after junior
Ben Savidge (Reading, Pa./Exeter) made the score 76-52 with a layup at the 1:40 mark.
Holy Family finished the game shooting 11-of-25 from three-point range compared to only 4-of-18 from deep by Concordia.
Holy Family is back in action a week from today as the Tigers travel to face Le Moyne College in Syracuse, N.Y. for a non-conference contest. Game time is slated for 3:00 p.m.
