Piscataway, N.J. - The Holy Family University men's basketball team faced Division I Rutgers University in an exhibition contest at the Rutgers Athletic Center Sunday afternoon. The Scarlet Knights came away with a 92-52 victory over the Tigers.
Rutgers began the game on a 17-5 run to take a 12-point lead midway through the first half. The Scarlet Knights would go on to compile a 44-21 halftime to take a commanding lead over the Tigers.
In the second half, Rutgers extended its lead to 50-26 after a jumper by sophomore Eli Carter. However, the Tigers would follow with 10-1 run to cut the Scarlet Knights lead to 15 points after freshman
Hunter Wysocki (Colts Neck, N.J./Colts Neck) capped the run with a pair of free throws.
Sophomore
Alberto Munoz (Morrisville, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) highlighted the Tigers' run with five points, including a three-pointer to pace the run. Munoz led all scorers with 21 points as he converted 11-of-13 free throw attempts.
As the half progressed, Holy Family cut the lead to 54-43 after junior
Ervin Ezell (Deptford, N.J./Deptford High) drained a three-pointer at the 10:43 mark of the half. Ezell finished with eight points and six rebounds to go along with three steals.
After the big three-pointer by Ezell, Rutgers quickly responded with a 7-0 run to increase the lead to 61-43 after redshirt-sophomore Kadeem Jack knocked down a pair of free throws at the 9:50 mark.
Holy Family would cut the lead back down to 14 points (61-47) with 8:50 left to play in regulation but that would be as close as the Tigers would get of the Scarlet Knights' lead. Rutgers closed the final eight-plus minutes of regulation with a 31-5 run on their way to the 92-52 victory.
Sophomore
Richard Council (New York, N.Y./Rice) finished with nine points and five rebounds for the Tigers, while senior
Angel Ayala (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) came off the bench to contribute seven points to go along with a pair of rebounds.
For Rutgers, sophomore Myles Mack led a trio of scorers that finished in double-figures for the Scarlet Knights. Mack finished with a team-high 17 points to go along with six rebounds. Sophomore Jerome Seagears added 16 points, while Carter finished with 14 points and six assists.
Holy Family will open its 2012-13 season officially on Friday, Nov. 9 as the Tigers travel to face Cedarville University in a non-conference contest.
