Kutztown, Pa. - Juniors
Ervin Ezell (Deptford, N.J./Deptford High) and
Alberto Munoz (Morrisville, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) combined for 47 points as the Holy Family University men's basketball team defeated Kutztown University by the score of 91-75 in a non-conference contest Tuesday night at Keystone Arena.
Holy Family snaps its two-game losing streak with the win to improve to 3-3 overall, while Kutztown is now 1-4 overall.
Holy Family trailed the entire first half after Kutztown opened the game on an 8-1 run. The Golden Bears led by as many as 13 points late in the half after freshman Ryan Connolly scored a layup to make the score 35-22 with 3:37 left until halftime.
The Tigers would go on to cut the Kutztown lead down to six before the end of the half after sophomore
Eric Fleming (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) knocked down a three for the final score before halftime to make the score 37-31. Fleming finished with 14 points after knocking down three three-pointers (3-9).
In the second half, the Holy Family offense came to life as the Tigers exploded for 60 points, nearly doubling their points scored in the first half. Holy Family shot 60-percent from the field in the second stanza and were fueled by the deep threat of Ezell and Munoz who combined for five three-pointers.
Munoz scored 14 of his game-high 24 points in the second half, while Ezell contributed 17 points in the half to finished with 23 points. Munoz shot 8-of-15 from the field, and filled the stat sheet with four rebounds and five assists. Ezell converted 11-of-12 from the free throw line and led the game with ten assists.
Holy Family outscored Kutztown, 22-5 the first six minutes of the second half to flip the game around as the Tigers led 53-42 after Ezell drained a three-pointer. Ezell's three capped an 11-0 run after the game was tied at 42-42 at the 17:15 mark.
Holy Family would go on to lead by as many as 18 points after freshman Tuhran Griffin converted a pair of free throws to make the score 76-58 with 6:14 to play.
Kutztown would cut the Tigers' lead to single digits after Connolly scored a layup to make the score 80-72 with 2:23 remaining in regulation.
However, Holy Family closed the game out on an 11-3 run, including the game's final five points to cap the scoring at 91 points. The 91 points marked the most the Tigers have scored in a game since Dec. 30, 2009 when the team scored 94 points in a 100-94 loss to Assumption College in overtime.
Senior
Angel Ayala (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) came off the bench to score 11 points after shooting 3-of-3 from the field and 4-of-6 from the free throw line for the Tigers. Freshman
Isaiah Gans (Philadelphia, Pa./Redemption Christian Academy) recorded his first career double-double with 13 points (6-9) and 11 rebounds.
For Kutztown, senior Micah Fraction led the team with 21 points to go along with six assists and four rebounds. Connolly finished with 15 points and seven rebounds. Junior Tyler Brooks contributed nine points and seven rebounds to go along with three steals.
Holy Family is back in action on Saturday, Dec. 1 as the Tigers host Dominican College in the first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest of the season. Game time is slated for 3 p.m.
