Men’s Basketball Prevails Over Nyack College, 87-81

Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University men's basketball team snapped its four-game losing streak after defeating Nyack College, 87-81, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest at the Campus Center Saturday afternoon.

Holy Family improves to 6-19 overall and 4-11 in the CACC, while Nyack falls to 2-22 overall and 0-16 in the CACC.

Junior Tim Smith (Philadelphia, Pa./Cardinal Dougherty) (Philadelphia, Pa./Cardinal Dougherty) led the Holy Family offense with a game-high 30 points. He also grabbed six rebounds and dished out six assists. Freshman Levente Csorvasi (Kecskemet, Hungary /Afeosz) (Kecskemet, Hungary/Afeosz) recorded a new career-high with 17 points after shooting 7-of-10 from the field.

Sophomore Khiry Hankins (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day School) (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day School) and freshman Rashaad Sneed (Durham, N.C./Hillside Heat Academy) (Durham, N.C./Hillside Heat Academy) each tallied 15 points. Freshman Alberto Munoz (Morrisville, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) (Morrisville, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds and finished with seven points in the victory.

For Nyack, junior David Cerant scored a team-high 16 points off the bench to lead the Warriors as six different players averaged double-figures in scoring. Senior James Oyamo and junior Lafayette Curtis each finished with 14 points. Oyamo also grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds to record a double-double. Freshman Ryan Woodard contributed 12 points, while junior Louis Allen scored 11 points and sophomore Jamaur Jackson added ten.

Holy Family opened the game on a 29-6 run and extended its lead to as many as 25 points on two different occasions in the first half. The Tigers led 42-17 after Csorvasi scored a layup at the 5:49 mark of the half.

However, Nyack rallied and outscored Holy Family, 20-5 the final five-plus minutes of the half to trim the Tigers lead to only ten points (47-37) at halftime.

In the second half, Nyack began chipping away at the Holy Family lead and came within two points after Cerant drained a three-pointer to make the score 58-56 with 13:39 left to play. Holy Family responded and increased its lead back to eight points after Sneed scored a jumper at the 10:29 mark (66-58).

Later in the half, Nyack finally took over the lead after trailing by as many as 25 points at one point. Allen knocked down a three-pointer with 6:47 to play to give the Warriors a 69-68 advantage.

On the very next possession, Holy Family took back the lead after Smith drained a three of his own to make the score 71-69 in favor of the Tigers. From that point on, Holy Family never relinquished the lead. As a team, they converted 9-of-10 from the free throw line in the final two minutes of play to secure the victory.

Holy Family is back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 23 as the Tigers travel to face cross-town rival the University of the Sciences in a CACC contest. Game time is slated for 8 p.m.
