Men’s Basketball Defeated in OT as Assumption Prevails, 78-74




Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University men's basketball team came up a tad short against Assumption College on day two of the East Region Classic hosted by Philadelphia University Friday afternoon at the Gallagher Center.  The Greyhounds escaped with a 78-74 overtime victory.
 
Holy Family is now 5-6 overall, while Assumption improves to 6-5 overall after the non-conference victory.
 
Junior Khiry Hankins (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day School) and sophomore Alberto Munoz (Morrisville, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) combined for 53 points to lead the Holy Family offense.  Hankins finished with a career-high 30 points after shooting 10-of-19 from the field.  He also knocked down 6-of-12 from beyond the arc.  Munoz shot 8-of-17 from the field to finish with 23 points.  He also grabbed a team-best nine rebounds. 
 
Junior Angel Ayala (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) added 16 points off the bench for the Tigers.  Ayala finished 6-of-10 from the field and was a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line.  He also dished out a team-best four assists. 
 
For Assumption, senior Kevin Donahue finished with a team-best 27 points as he shot 10-of-15 from the field, including 5-of-10 from beyond the arc.  Junior Ronson Quick contributed 18 points off the bench for the Greyhounds, while fellow classmate Ryan Rozsnaki dished out a game-high 12 assists.
 
Holy Family trailed by as many as nine points at the 13:08 mark of the second half after junior Mike Auriemma drained a three-pointer to give Assumption a 51-42 lead.
 
However, Holy Family used a 9-0 run capped by a three-pointer by Munoz to tie the game at 51-51 with less than ten minutes remaining in regulation.
 
As the half progressed, Holy Family eventually grabbed its biggest lead of the game after Munoz scored on back-to-back possessions.  He drained a three-pointer to give the Tigers a 66-65 lead with 1:45 showing on the clock and then scored on the team's next trip down the court to make the score 68-65 with 1:24 left to play in the half.
 
Assumption would go and cut the Tigers' lead to 68-66 after Quick split a pair of free throw attempts with just over a minute to play in regulation.  On its next possession, Assumption tied the game at 68-68 after Quick scored a layup  with nine seconds remaining on the clock. 
 
Both teams would each miss a three-pointer in the final nine seconds to force overtime with the game tied at 68-68.
 
In overtime, Quick scored Assumption's first three points to give the Greyhounds a 71-68 advantage.  The Greyhounds increased their lead to four points after Quick converted a pair of free throws to make the score 76-72 with only :49 seconds remaining in the first overtime period. 
 
Holy Family would cut the lead in half after Ayala made his two free throw attempts to make the score 76-74 with :42 seconds remaining.  However, that's as close as the Tigers would get as Assumption limited Holy Family to only one shot the rest of the way securing the victory.
 
Holy Family is back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 3 as the Tigers travel to face cross-town rival Philadelphia University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest.  Game time is slated for 6 p.m.
