HISTORY! HFU Becomes First CACC Women’s Basketball Team to Win the East Region Title, Advance to Elite Eight

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – HFU made history on Monday night, becoming the first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women's basketball team to win the NCAA Division II East Regional with a 78-62 triumph over third-seeded Daemen on the campus Southern Connecticut State University.

Earning the seven seed in the Elite Eight, Holy Family will matchup with second-seeded Indiana (PA) in a 2:30 p.m. tip hosted at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse in Pittsburgh on March 24.
 
Individual Highlights
  • Skyler Searfoss (Jim Thorpe, Pa./Jim Thorpe Area) made all eight of her free throw attempts en route to 14 points and Most Outstanding Player honors
  • Kaelah Carter (Watervliet, N.Y./Shaker (The College of Saint Rose)) also scored 14, sinking 6-of-11 field goals, while Taylor Hinkle (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks South) pulled down more than double the amount of rebounds as any other player with 14, as both were named to the All-Tournament Team
  • Ella Brown (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) topped the Tigers with 16 points, two shy of a season-best, highlighted by making 4-of-7 3-pointers
  • Amy Ngo (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) tied a game-high with five assists, while leading HFU with two steals
  • Kara Meredith (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Archbishop Wood) was also in double-figures with 10 points, while Lauren Palangio (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) added nine

  • Holy Family dominated the glass, more than doubling up Daemen in rebounds (50-23)
  • Sparked by Brown, the Tigers' bench outscored the Wildcats' 32-6
 
How it Happened
  • HFU trailed for 58 seconds after Daemen opened the scoring, but the Tigers would roar back with 16 in a row and lead by nine-plus the rest of the way
  • Holy Family held the Wildcats scoreless for 6:46 during the stretch, in which Meredith half of the points
  • Her triple with 4:22 showing on the first quarter clock established the first double-digit advantage, 14-2, before Searfoss capped the run with two foul shots
  • Daemen got as close as 10 on three occasions in the second, including at 27-17 with 3:35 left in the half, but the Tigers would close on a 10-2 flurry as Brown hit two 3-pointers, highlighted by one in the final seconds for a 37-19 cushion entering the locker room
  • The Wildcats then made a push to within nine twice in the second half, including at 61-52 with 6:24 to go, only for HFU to seal the victory with an 8-1 surge that both began and ended with Brown
