CHESTER, Va. – After suffering a 13-14 comeback defeat in game one,
Torin McKenzie's (Hamilton, N.J./Nottingham (Mercer County CC)) walk-off single gave the HFU Baseball Team a 9-8 eight-inning triumph over Mansfield in the nightcap on Saturday.
The Tigers overcame a 0-4 deficit thanks to a six-run fourth, highlighted by a bases-clearing triple from
Andres Rivera (Silver Spring, Md./Woodrow Wilson (Montgomery College)).
Rivera then kept the eighth inning alive with a two-out single before stealing second, to set the stage for McKenzie's walk-off.
That capped a performance in which Rivera reached base four times, finishing 2-for-3 with two walks, three RBI and two runs.
Freshman
Trevor Morris (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) earned his first career win after throwing 2.1 innings of hitless relief, in which he struck out four.
Holy Family led 9-5 entering the seventh inning of the opener, only for Mansfield to break out for nine runs.
The Tigers nearly produced a comeback of their own after Rivera cut the deficit to 13-14 with a three-run blast. The tying run reached base on a McKenzie hit-by-pitch, but the Mounties were able to get the final out.
Jephson Hadson-Taylor (Cheltenham, Pa./La Salle College (University of Maine)) led the offense with his second four-hit performance at HFU, while
Perry Chetney (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Baldwinsville (Millersville University)) homered.
In addition to Hadson-Taylor,
Brayden King (Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek (Chattanooga State CC)) and
Jalen David (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond) also had multiple hits in both games.
