Men’s Basketball Survives at Buzzer for Fifth Straight Home Win

PHILADELPHIA – The HFUMen's Basketball Team scored the last four points as it held Jefferson scoreless for the final 2:57, including two misses at the buzzer, in a 78-76 triumph inside of the Campus Center on Wednesday night. 

The Tigers' 12 overall victories are their most since 2018-19. 
 
Holy Family closed on an 8-2 run over the last 3:42, beginning with a Najee Coursey (Egg Harbor City, N.J./Cedar Creek (Sacred Heart University)) turnaround at the 3:42 mark.
 
Omarion Jett (Montclair, N.J./Saint Benedict's Prep (American International College)) then knotted the score 23 seconds later and after the Rams' final basket, two Di'Andre Howell-South (Paterson, N.J./Immaculate Conception (Wagner College)) free throws tied it again at 76 with 1:57 left.
 
Following another defensive stop, it was Jett who hit the eventual game-winner with 1:12 showing. 
 
The Tigers would then force two turnovers in the last 48 seconds, prior to the two misses at the buzzer, as Jefferson missed its final five shots, the first two of which were blocked by Coursey. 
 
Individual Highlights
  • Coursey led all players with a career-best four shots, while adding nine points and a team-high three assists
  • Jett topped Holy Family with 20 points, a game-best six rebounds and three assists
  • Howell-South also had six boards and three assists, to go along with 13 points and a team-high two steals
  • Matt Gardler (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) was in double-figures too, with 14 points

  • Both teams shot over 50.0 percent, but the Tigers held the edge in 3-pointers (10-6) and free throws (14-12)
 
How it Happened
  • Six straight points gave Jefferson the largest lead of the night, 20-28, with an even six minutes on the first half clock, but HFU came right back with a 12-2 surge to go up 32-30 on a Gardler 3-pointer 2:11 ahead of the break
  • Jett would then nail a 3-pointer at the buzzer for a 39-35 halftime edge, and it was his triple that also gave the Tigers their largest advantage, 56-49, with 11:58 to go 
  • Howell-South also put HFU ahead 48-41 43 seconds later, only to have the Rams surge back with nine unanswered to regain the lead midway through the period
  • The game was played within a single possession until TJU used five in a row to go up 68-72 with just 4:35 left, and the Rams also led 70-74 40 seconds later, prior to the game-ending run
